LOGAN, Utah – Cowgirl senior Megan Brunette kicked off the 2017 Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships for Wyoming with a solid performance on Thursday, taking fourth place in the women's 10,000 meters with a raw time of 36 minutes, 41.21 seconds. Brunette was one of just five competitors in the field of 23 to finish with a time under 37 minutes.

"It's really neat to see Megan end her career with a great race in an extremely talented 10K," said head coach Bryan Berryhill. "It was really hot when they were running and she stayed focused and competed well. Coach (Amanda) Clower has done an amazing job with her this spring to put her in position to go out there and place fourth."

Competing in her final conference championship meet wearing the Brown and Gold, Brunette worked hard for five team points for the Cowgirls in the first track event of the weekend. The Colorado Springs, Colo., native – who owns UW all-time top 10 marks in two indoor events and two outdoor events, including the 10,000 meters – moved up one spot from her 2016 MW finish in the event.

After taking 17th in the 10,000 meters at the 2014 MW outdoor championships, Brunette has steadily moved up the conference ranks in the event throughout the remainder of her career as a Cowgirl. She has now been a top-eight Mountain West 10K runner three times in her career and a top-five competitor twice.

Boise State freshman Allie Ostrander claimed the individual title in the women's 10,000 meters with a time of 35:51.20, while Air Force's Jaci Smith (35:53.92) and Colorado State's McKenna Spillar (36:37.93) were the other two runners to finish ahead of Brunette.

The 2017 Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships continue Friday from Ralph Maughan Track Stadium in Logan. The women's hammer throw is the first field event on deck for Friday, starting at 10 a.m. MT, while the men's 1,500 meters is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. to begin the day's action on the track.
