LAS VEGAS, Nev. (April 28, 2017) – The Wyoming tennis team (18-3, 5-0 MW) opened up the 2017 MW Tennis Championship with a 4-2 win over the Nevada Wolf Pack (8-10 overall, 0-2 MW) on Friday morning.

"We played our style of tennis which is what we talked about all week," head coach Dean Clower said. "The team was determined and gutsy in singles today and that's what it takes to win at this tournament. We need a quick recover and be ready to do it again tomorrow."

The Cowgirls got off to a quick start in the match by taking the doubles point. The team of Dorottya Jonas and Ana Tkachenko won the final four games to come out on top with a 6-3 win over Blaga Delic and Sheila Morales, followed by a 6-3 victory by Milka Genkova and Magdalena Stencel over Milena Achlamov and Carlijn Ketting.

It was quite the battle in singles with every match highly contested. Tkachenko won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, against Achlamov, while Jonas defeated Morales, 7-5, 6-4. Stencel dropped the first set 6-1 against Herrero, came back to win the second 7-5 but unfortunately lost the third 6-2. The Wolf Pack closed the gap making it 3-2 with a three set win, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, by Adriana Gerelyova over Tessa Van Der Ploeg. The Cowgirls clinched the match with Elisa Koonik beating Ketting, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Wyoming will be back in action tomorrow against the number one seeded UNLV Lady Rebels. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m. MT. Live stats can be found on GoWyo.com.
