LAS VEGAS, Nev. (April 29, 2017) – For the second straight season, the Wyoming tennis team (18-3, 5-0 MW) had its season ended by the top-seeded UNLV Lady Rebels (18-7 overall, 4-1 MW) with a 4-3 loss in the semifinals of the 2017 MW Championship on Saturday morning.
The Cowgirls took command early by winning two doubles matches to go up 1-0. The team of Milka Genkova and Magdalena Stencel won easily 6-1 over Paola Artiga and Anna Bogoslavets, while Dorottya Jonas and Ana Tkachenko also won by a 6-1 score over Carol Yang and Cristina Moroi.
It would go down to the last singles match of the day to determine the winner. UNLV evened it up with Aiwen Zhu winning in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, over Jonas. Each team went 2-2 over the next four matches. Genkova defeated En-Pei Huang, 6-3, 6-1, while the Lady Rebels won the next two to pull ahead 3-2. At the number one spot, Yang beat Stencel, 6-3, 6-4, followed by Bogoslavets over Tessa Van Der Ploeg, 6-3, 6-4. Elisa Koonik pulled the Cowgirls even with a straight set win, 6-4, 6-4, against Artiga. It came down to the sixth position and the match between Tkachenko and Jovana Kenic. UW would win the first set 7-5, which was answered by a 6-3 win the second for UNLV. Both players broke the others serve to begin the set but unfortunately Kenic won the next five games to win the set 6-1 and the match 4-3 for the Lady Rebels.
Wyoming ends the tournament with an 18-4 record overall and 5-0 in the Mountain West. The 18 wins is a program best and the team also finished a perfect 10-0 at home.
