PALM DESERT, Calif. – Wyoming men's golf held its
seventh-place position after a team score of 287 (-1) in the second round of
the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at the Classic Club.
Senior Ryan Wallen climbed
up the leaderboard with a five-under round of 67. Wallen made his move with
four-straight birdies on the back nine and then played clean, even-par golf on
the front nine to leave himself tied for 14th after 36 holes. Junior Arron Lickteig also came in under par in round two, posting a one-under 71. Lickteig
made one birdie and no bogeys on the back nine, then closed out even-par over
his final nine holes to match his lowest round of the 2016-17 season.
Junior Glenn Workman carded a 73 (+1), three shots better than his opening-round score and junior Drew McCullough posted a 76 (+4), giving the Cowboys a team score of 287 (-1)
for the second round. Wyoming now has a two-round score of 584 (+8), good for seventh.
Multiple
student-athletes made a run at the Classic Club's course record of 62 today,
but fell just short. Colorado's Jeremy Paul shot the low round of the day with
an eight-under 64. Oregon's Norman Xiong and Wyndham Clark each posted scores
of 65 (-7). Colorado closed the gap on Oregon with an impressive team score of
266 (-22), the lowest single-round score in men's Division I golf this season.
The Buffs combined for 24 birdies, an eagle and just four bogeys.
The Ducks continue to
lead the field, but now by just four strokes after a team score of 271 (-17)
today. Oregon holds a two-round score of 553 (-23), followed by Colorado in
second with 557 (-19) and Kansas in third with 569 (-7). Texas Tech is just behind
their conference foe with a 570 (-6), and TCU with a 577 (+1) rounds out the
top five. Freshman Norman Xiong of Oregon sits atop the individual leaderboard
with a five-under 67.
"We played pretty
well, and overall we saw some really impressive performances today," UW head
coach Joe Jensen said. "There were lots of birdies today which is fun to see.
What Norman [Xiong] is doing is incredible, as a freshman who just graduated
from high school last December."
The Cowboys will
return to action tomorrow morning with tee times beginning at 8:50 a.m. MT.
Wyoming will start off the front nine, competing alongside TCU, Arkansas-Little
Rock and Nebraska.
