COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Cowgirl swimming and
diving held onto its fourth-place position after the third day of action at the
Mountain West Championships at the Texas A&M Natatorium in College Station,
Texas.
Junior Maria Harutjunjan's third-straight Mountain West Championship title in the 100
breaststroke was the story of the night for Wyoming. The Maardu, Estonia,
native raced her way into the record books once again, clocking the first-ever
sub-minute time in conference history. Harutjunjan's time of 59.85 broke her
own MW-record time of 1:00.21.
Wyoming placed two
Cowgirls in the top-eight of the 100 backstroke. Sophomore Isobel Ryan took
third with a time of 53.97, while sophomore Samantha Burke placed eighth,
logging a season-best time of 54.99. Junior Kelly Sheldon earned a season-best
time of her own in the 200 freestyle (1:48.37), placing seventh. The Cowgirls
notched a third-place finish in the 400 medley relay and another top mark of
the year. Ryan, Harutjunjan, Burke and senior Danielle Badger hit the mark of 3:39.55.
Wyoming remains in
fourth place with 669 points and just eight events remaining in the MW
Championship. Boise State continues to pull away from the field with 972
points, followed by San Diego State with 769 points. Nevada sits in third with 748
points. Colorado State is fifth with 540 points and New Mexico is in sixth with
643 points. San Jose State (362.5 pts.), UNLV (337 pts.), Air Force (334 pts.) and
Fresno State (305.5 pts.) round out the rankings.
The Cowgirls will
return to action tomorrow morning with the preliminary session at 11 a.m. MT
followed by the final eight events of the Mountain West Championships beginning
in the 6:30 p.m. session.
