LARAMIE, Wyo. – Junior thrower
Garrett Lynch won the men's shot put with a personal best mark of 56 feet, 0.5 inches on Friday at War Memorial Fieldhouse, highlighting a number of solid marks by the University of Wyoming track & field team as the squad completed its last meet before the 2017 Mountain West indoor championships. Lynch provided one of the Cowboys' three event wins at Friday's home meet, while the Cowgirls posted eight event victories, including a dominant win by
Jerayah Davis in the 55-meter dash.
Sophomore thrower
Martin Fitzwater also tossed a personal best 54-6.5 to finish third in the men's shot put. "That was a big positive," said head coach
Bryan Berryhill of the career-best performances by Lynch and Fitzwater. "Coach [Paul] Barrett and I had seen it in practice, bur for them to go out and get it done is big going into conference."
Emelda Malm-Annan launched a season-best mark in the women's weight throw, finishing second with a toss of 62-6.75.
Kayla York was fourth with a personal record of 56-3.75. In the men's weight throw, senior
Damon Unland took third place in his season debut with a mark of 57-7.5.
Davis crushed the competition with a time of 6.75 seconds in the 55-meter dash while also setting a personal record with a mark of 19-8.75 in the long jump.
Ja'la Henderson outjumped Davis by one inch to win the event.
"Both Jerayah and Ja'la jumped well," Berryhill said following the meet. "Having two girls in the same meet over six meters – I highly doubt that has ever happened in school history."
In the men's long jump,
Caleb Seeton and
Bobby Wingeleth went 2-3 with marks of 23-2.75 and 22-2.25, respectively. Sophomore
Kyle Alexander notched a personal record of 46-2.75 in the men's triple jump, taking third place.
Day Timberman was another event winner for the Cowgirls, edging teammate
Allegra Carson by a quarter of an inch to win the event with a mark of 38-9.75. Carson's mark of 38-9.5 was a season-best. Freshman
Anissa Warner was victorious in the women's high jump with a mark of 5-5. On the men's side, freshman
Kyle Pollock took second place with a collegiate personal best of 6-4.75.
Cowgirl junior
Melina Harris collected a victory in the 400 meters with a raw time of 58.14 seconds, while senior
Mikalah Skates won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.20. Skates' time converts to a season-best 60-meter hurdles time of 8.82.
In the men's 55-meter hurdles, senior
Jordan Charles finished second with a time of 7.42.
Sam Kirkeide and
Jace Marx went 2-3 in the men's 55-meter dash with times of 6.43 and 6.45, respectively.
"I liked the energy today," Berryhill said of the overall effort displayed by the Pokes. "I thought the focus was there. I feel good from that standpoint. There are a few technical things we need to clean up over the next four or five days, but I thought we had good energy and focus today."
The Brown and Gold will return to Albuquerque, N.M. on Thursday, Feb. 23, for the 2017 Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships. The meet will take place at the Albuquerque Convention Center and will run through Saturday, Feb. 25.
