LARAMIE, Wyo. – UW swimming and diving kicked off the
2016-17 season on Friday evening inside the Corbett Pool. The Gold Team came
out on top, defeating the Brown Team by a score of 304-286.
The veterans for the Gold team
led the way on Friday. Junior Kelly Sheldon, one of two team captains, claimed
victory in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:27.09. Junior Maria Harutjunjan swept the breaststroke events, with first place finishes in the 100
breaststroke (1:04.84) and 200 breaststroke (2:23.09). Junior Ryan Ball led the
men's side with wins in the 100 backstroke (51.09) as well as the 200
backstroke (1:49.90). On the diving board, freshman Karla Contreras led the way
in both the one meter (306.30) and three meter (271.73) events.
"Our overall performance was
really good and I thought everyone stepped up their game," Sheldon said. "It
makes me happy that these are all my teammates, because going up against all of
them is really tough. Having that drive to beat your teammate is a different
fire, but it was cool to see everyone succeed."
The Brown Team saw numerous
standout performances from underclassmen. Freshman Daniela Luna Rocha raced to
victory in the 1000 freestyle (10:27.74) and the 500 freestyle (5:07.30). Another
two-event winner, sophomore Isobel Ryan, earned first-place finishes in the 100
backstroke (57.92) as well as the 50 freestyle (24.49). Freshman diver Scotia Mullin placed first in the one meter event with a score of 290.85 and second in
the three meter event, scoring a 298.73.
