Castillo Leads Charge at Cowgirl Classic

University of Wyoming sophomore Klara Castillo fired her best rounds of the spring season on the opening day of the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic on Monday in Maricopa, Ariz. Castillo is tied for fifth place with a two-round total of 144 (E ) to lead UW. The Cowgirls shot a 618 (+42) on the day, and are tied for 15th in the 19-team field.

"We had some great individual performances today," Cowgirl head coach Josey Stender said. "Everyone has something positive they can take away from today."

Castillo was consistent all day and led the Cowgirls with four birdies at the AK-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Course. She fired rounds of 72 (E ) on Monday. Megan and Kaylee Knadler are tied for 25th after the first day with scores of 150 (+6). Senior Kathleen Kershisnik is next in line for UW, as she is tied for 40th in the 110-individual field. Kershisnik had rounds of 77 (+5) and 75 (+3), respectively.

"We will make a move up tomorrow if we start with confidence and have more putts drop for us," Stender added.

Gabrielle Gibson opened the tournament with a 73 (+1) before an 83 (+11) during the second round. She is tied 60th with the final round remaining. Playing as an individual, Amanda Hinchey also had her best rounds of the spring season with an 80 (+8) and 78 (+6) on Monday. She is sitting in 75th place for Wyoming.

Taylor Dorans shot a 79 (+7) to begin the tournament and then followed with a second-round 80 (+8). Emily Woodard is one shot behind with a two-round total of 160 (+16), after she recorded scores of 81 (+9) and 79 (+7), respectively. Mackenzie Barrie had scores of 84 (+12) and 83 (+11) on Monday to close out the Cowgirls.

Annie Freeman of Santa Clara is the individual leader after the first day. She has a 140 (-4) after scoring a 70 (-2) during both rounds. Idaho has a one-shot lead with the final round remaining. The Vandals have a mark of 582 (+6).

The final round will begin in the monring with a 8:30 a.m. MT shotgun start.
