A busy Saturday in War Memorial Fieldhouse was capped with six individual championships in two divisions at the 38th annual Cowboy Open. A pair of juniors in Benjamin Stroh (174 pounds) and Drew Templeman (125 pounds) won titles at new weights for the Pokes joining senior Tanner Harms (285 pounds) and sophomore Bryce Meredith (141 pounds) with individual titles in the elite bracket.

"I need to look at the brackets to get a better feel of how we did today," UW head coach Mark Branch said. "We need to get better with a conference dual coming up next week. We really have our work cut out for us and we need to work on wrestling with a little more passion."

Stroh, who moved down from 184 pounds used three pins including one in the finals to win the championship at 174 pounds. Templeman, who wrestled at 133-pounds last season won the 125-pound bracket with two major decisions to open the day.

Harms won his title by going 3-0 with two major decisions and a decision. Meredith, who was making his debut with the Cowboys was nearly perfect with two falls and one technical fall. He defeated teammate junior Cole Mendenhall in the finals.

In the amateur bracket, wrestling unattached freshman 125-pounder Drake Foster went 4-0 with two major decisions and a fall. Fellow freshman Dewey Krueger was named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Amateur Bracket going 4-0 including a fall in the finals.

Junior Brandon Tribble earned a second-place finish in the elite bracket alongside Mendenhall. He fell to NCAA qualifier Trent Noon of Northern Colorado in the finals. Senior Austin Breckenridge (149 pounds) and sophomore Archie Colgan (157 pounds) battled back in the consolation bracket to finish third in the elite bracket. Colgan had a strong showing in the third-place match winning by major decision, 14-2. The other placer included senior Jace Jensen at 184 pounds and sophomore Chaz Polson at 165 pounds, who each finished fourth.

Other amateurs for the Pokes that placed included freshman Ben Hornickle and Steven Allen. Allen finished second on the day going 4-1 with four decisions. Hornickle finished third going 7-1 on the day battling back after falling in his second match of the morning.

"The tournament went well and it was a big tournament," Branch said. "We had some great performance, but we need to get better in some situations."

The Cowboys open the dual portion of the schedule facing off against Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo. On Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. It will be the Pokes first dual as a member of the Big 12 Conference.
