Cowboys Sprint Past Colorado School of Mines, Cowgirls Fall to Boise State

The University of Wyoming Cowboy swimming and diving team raced passed Colorado School of Mines, 155-96 on Saturday afternoon in Golden, Colo. The Cowgirls were also in action falling to Mountain West rival Boise State, 189.5-110.5. The Pokes move to 4-1 in dual meets with the Cowgirls falling to 6-2.

The Pokes won 12-of-13 events at CSM. Junior George Eglesfield, along with freshmen Kyle White and Wade Nelson each collected two event wins to lead the Cowboys. Eglesfield won the 100 backstroke at 52.64. He also won the 200 backstroke with a mark of 1:54.92. White won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 59.33 and the 50 freestyle at 21.46. Nelson won the 400 individual medley at 4:14.68 and 200 breaststroke at 2:10.92.

Junior Kyle Scalise won the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.87. Junior Kevin Waller dominated the 1,650 freestyle touching in at 16:56.45. Junior Ryan Nelson won the 200 butterfly by seven seconds clocking in at 1:55.64. Freshman Eric Oleson won the 500 freestyle by 27 seconds at 4:47.09. Senior Ryan O'Leary won the 100 freestyle with a mark of 47.04.

The Pokes won the 200 freestyle relay with the team of senior Adam Kalms, junior Bryce Carter, White and O'Leary clocking in at 1:23.88.

"I thought the guys came out well and swam great," associate head coach Matt Leach said. "The quick start just got us going and the team kept moving and overall it was a great event for us."

Junior Nicole Hlavacek and freshman Maria Harutjunjan led the Cowgirls each winning an event at Boise State. Hlavacek continued her dominance of the 1,000 freestyle clocking in at 10:21.88. Harutjunjan won the 100 breaststroke with a mark of 1:05.24. She also finished second in the 200 breaststroke at 2:20.66. Junior Molly Coonce added a pair of runner-up finishes. She clocked in at 56.00 in the 100 butterfly and 2:05.63 in the 200 butterfly.

In the diving events, junior Kari Campbell finished second on the 1-meter springboard at 255.90. Senior Holly Heussner led the Cowgirls on the 3-meter springboard with a tally of 263.93 finishing fourth.

"I though the girls had a better meet than last week, but Boise State is a tough team," head coach Tom Johnson said. "I was proud of our depth today and we got to be better next week."

The divers return to action next Friday and Saturday at the Air Force Invite in Colorado Spring, Colo. The swimmers head to Las Vegas to take on UNLV and Northern Arizona on Saturday.
