Cowgirl Classic First Day

The University of Wyoming Cowgirl golf team opened the eighth annual Wyoming Cowgirl Classic Monday in Maricopa, Ariz. The event was hosted at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club for the first time in the events history. The Cowgirls are 14th in the 20-team field after the first two rounds turning in scores of 312 (+24) and 321 (+33) for a two-round total of 633 (+57).
"Troon Golf did a great job with this championship facility and the staff is first class," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "As a team we just had a few mistakes and we just need to bounce back and see how resilient we are tomorrow."
Sophomore Emily Woodard led the Cowgirls with a two-round tally of 155 (+11). She shot rounds of 78 (+6) and 77 (+5), as she is tied for 41st place in the 108-golfer field. Senior Stacey Blunt and Samantha Stancato are tied for 46th place each adding a score of 156 (+12). Blunt turned in scorecards of 80 (+8) and 76 (+4). Stancato was steady once again shooting a 76 (+4) in the first round and 80 (+8) in the second 18-holes.
"It was great to see Emily keep improving on a tough course that demands all aspects of the game." Stender said.
Senior Emily Wood is tied for 85th place with a two-round tally of 166 (+22). She turned in scores of 78 (+6) and 88 (+16). Freshman Taylor Dorans is tied for 105th with scores of 91 (+19) and 89 (+17), as she ended the day at 180 (+36).
Wyoming has three individuals playing in this year's event. Freshman Mackenzie Barrie led the individuals with a two-round score of 157 (+13), as she is tied for 55th place. She turned in rounds of 76 (+4) and 81 (+9). Sophomore Kathleen Kershisnik is tied for 85th with scores of 83 (+11) in both rounds. Junior Kristen Jensen rounded out the Cowgirl individuals finishing tied for 92nd at 168 (+24) with tallies of 83 (+11) and 85 (+13).
New Mexico State is the leader after the first day with a score of 593 (+17). Defending champion Boise State is in second with a two-round mark of 598 (+22). Lamar follows right behind the Broncos in third with a tally of 599 (+23).
New Mexico State's Camille Orito is the individual leader after the opening day with a tally of 141 (-3). She was the only golfer to shoot under par in both rounds with scores of 71 (-1) and 70 (-2).
The Cowgirl Classic wraps up Tuesday with one 18-hole round. The shotgun start is slated for 8:45 a.m. MT. Fans can follow live results by clicking on the link above.
