Wood Leads Wyoming on First Day of UNM Tournament

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Senior Emily Wood sits at 154 (+8) after Friday's first two rounds of the UNM Dick McGuire Invitational to pace the University of Wyoming women's golf team to 16th in the team standings at 631 (+47). Pepperdine leads the team field at 581 (-3) on the UNM Championship Course.

"In the beginning we got ourselves into some course management situations where we needed to make a few different adjustments and from those we had a hard time recovering," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "In the second round we played with better decision making and much better confidence. I thought we even played a little better than we shot."

Wood posted a 78 (+5) in the first round and followed with a 76 (+3) in the second round to sit in a tie for 47th. Junior Samantha Stancato is six shots back at 160 (+14) in a tie for 69th after both rounds with 80 (+7) and freshman Taylor Dorans fired a first round 83 (+10) and 78 (+5) in the second, to close out the day one shot behind Stancato in a tie for 73rd. Freshman Mackenzie Barrie fired an 85 (+12) first round score and a career-low 77 (+4) in the second and sits tied for 79th, as sophomore Kathleen Kershisnik hit rounds of 79 (+6) and 86 (+13) to close out the first day of the tournament in a tie for 84th.

"We know we can play better on this course and the freshmen seem to have a more comfortable feeling heading into tomorrow's round. Ending the way we did today is going to help us tomorrow. This is a very competitive field and we want to be right in the middle of it," Stender added.

The tournament concludes with an 8 a.m. MT shot gun start tomorrow.
