UNLV-UW: Box Score

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Nov. 5, 2016) – The University of Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 victory over UNLV on Saturday afternoon in the UniWyo Sports Complex. The Cowgirls won by scores of 25-20, 25-15, 25-17 in a balanced attack as they claimed their fifth-consecutive victory. 

Senior Kayla Slofkiss became the 11th Cowgirl in school history to record at least 1,000 career kills. She finished the day with eight kills, four digs and three total blocks to help guide UW (17-9, 10-3) over the Rebels (21-5, 10-4 MW). Fellow senior Laura Beach led both teams with 11 kills against UNLV in addition to her three blocks. Sophomore Reed Copeland joined Beach in double-digit kills with ten. Copeland also added a match-high six blocks for UW.

"Beyond the milestones, the unique thing about Kayla (Slofkiss) is that she still wants to come in every day and get better," opened UW head coach Chad Callihan. "It's great to see her get these accolades, but she does so much more for us besides put the ball away. The thing I was impressed with this afternoon was when we established that lead, we would be able to then continue to get momentum which would help us gain confidence. This UNLV team is very talented, and to play the way we did against them, I certainly have to give our girls a lot of credit today. "

Senior Courtney Chacon once again recorded a double-double as she passed out a match-best 31 assists with ten digs. It was Chacon's team-leading eighth double-double of the season. Junior Lily Austin recorded eight digs for the Brown and Gold while freshman Madi Fields had seven and junior Shelby Johnson had six. Additionally, sophomore Emily Lewis had five kills and four total blocks against UNLV.

UW held UNLV to a .040 hitting clip during the straight-set match. UNLV was fourth in the MW with a .244 hitting percentage before this afternoon's match. Wyoming, meanwhile, hit .214 for the match and also led the Rebels in assists, digs and blocks.

Wyoming will hit the road for its next three matches. UW will face Nevada and San Diego State next week before a matchup at Air Force on Nov. 16.

Set Breakdown:

Set 1: The Cowgirls fell behind 1-3 only to battle their way back to even the score at 11. UNLV called timeout with the Cowgirls ahead 13-11. A service error from the Rebels brought UW's advantage to five, 20-15. Copeland had two of the last five points for the Brown and Gold to help Wyoming claim the first set, 25-20. Copeland had four kills in the opening frame, as Chacon had her first 11 assists.

Set 2: Points were traded early in the second set before UW was able to break away. With the score tied at eight, Wyoming went on a 6-0 run to take a 14-8 lead. Slofkiss' 1,000th career kill gave UW a 17-12 advantage to spark an 8-3 run for the Brown and Gold which gave them a 2-0 set lead into intermission. Slofkiss posted four kills while Beach and Lewis recorded three during the second stanza. Chacon was once again in double-digit digs with ten and also had three digs.

Set 3: Wyoming's momentum continued in the third and final frame as UW jumped out to a 5-0 lead. An attacking error from the Rebels lead to a UNLV timeout and a 12-3 advantage for the Brown and Gold. UW rolled the rest of the way as five kills from Beach and four more from Copeland guided UW in the final frame. Wyoming sealed the victory with a 25-17 win. 

Notes:

-Kayla Slofkiss became the 11th Cowgirl to record 1,000 kills during her career. Additionally, with her four digs today, she is the fourth-ever Cowgirl with at least 1,000 kills and 900 digs.

-Laura Beach is still sixth all-time with 413 total blocks. Katie Donahue (1984-88) is fifth all-time with 419 blocks. Beach continues to hold the top spot in all-time hitting percentage (.374) and is 65 kills away from 1,000 for her career. Tonight's match was the 12th this season Beach had recorded at least ten kills.

-Courtney Chacon remains in sixth place in Cowgirl history with 3,178 career assists. She also recorded her 35th career double-double on Saturday, which leads all active MW players. It was the sixth match this season for Chacon with double-digit digs, and also the 16th match with at least 30 assists.

-Chad Callihan won his 46th conference match at the helm of Wyoming volleyball, which tied him with Hall of Fame coach Mike English for most all-time in Cowgirl history.
