LARAMIE, Wyo. (Nov.
20, 2016) – In an early season matchup with a ranked opponent, the University of Wyoming
wrestlers dropped a 33-8 dual meet to visiting No. 7 Nebraska inside the UniWyo Sports
Complex on Sunday evening. Nebraska moved to 2-0 on the season, as Wyoming fell
to 0-1.
"We knew what type of challenge we were facing as they are a
very talented team," UW head coach Mark Branch said. "But in the end, I did
expect a little more of a fight. Branson (Ashworth) and Cole (Mendenhall) were
are bright spots tonight. We'll no doubt get back in there and continue to work
fighting until the final whistle."
Wyoming was able to get off to a fast start in the dual,
which began at 165. Redshirt sophomore Branson Ashworth held off Dustin
Williams with an overtime victory (SV-1 3-1). Ashworth moved his season
record to 10-1 with the win. Junior Kyle Pope then fell by decision (7-6) to
Micah Barnes, before T.J. Dudley majored (18-4) junior Luke Paine.
No. 10 Aaron Studebaker followed with another major (14-3)
over Cody Vigoren during the fourth match of the dual. The win moved the
Husker's lead to 11-3 after the 197-pound weight class matchup. Wrestling at
heavyweight for the Pokes was redshirt sophomore Sam Eagan. Eagan fell by tech
fall (16-0, 2:44) to No. 18 Collin Jensen.
No. 8 Tim Lambert pinned senior Gunnar Woodburn in the
125-pound contest. It moved Nebraska's lead to 22-3 before junior Ronnie Stevens was able to earn two points off of escapes in the first period against No. 4
Eric Montoya. Montoya eventually won by tech fall (17-2, 3:30) to give the
Huskers a 27-3 advantage.
Junior Bryce Meredith fell by decision (6-2) to Colton
McCrystal. Meredith held a 1-0 lead into the third period before McCrystal
recorded a takedown and added a near fall to escape with the win. Redshirt
senior Cole Mendenhall posted a resounding 18-3 win over Jordan Shearer.
Mendenhall moves his perfect record to 9-0 on the season. It was also
Mendenhall's third tech fall of the year.
In the final matchup of the dual, Archie Colgan dropped a decision (5-2)
to Tyler Berger. Tied at two after the second period, Berger broke away with an
escape and takedown late in the third and final period.
Wyoming will return to action next Sunday as it welcomes
Iowa State to Laramie. The dual will begin at 2 p.m. MT.
