Led by a season-high 18 kills from senior Kayla Slofkiss,
the University of Wyoming women's volleyball team swept New Mexico in straight
sets (25-23, 25-18, 25-14) on Saturday afternoon. It was the tenth sweep for
the Cowgirls (11-7, 4-1 MW) this season.
"This was a nice rebound for us against a very talented New
Mexico team," UW head coach Chad Callihan said. "I thought our seniors had
another great match, but it was our supporting cast that really stepped up and
made key plays today. We will need more of that as we move forward."
Senior setter Courtney Chacon directed the offense to a .314
hitting percentage, dishing out 36 assists to go along with seven digs and two
kills. Senior middle blocker Laura Beach finished second on the team with 11
kills on .476 hitting, while also recording three total blocks. Slofkiss was
one dig away from her fourth double-double and one kill from tying her
career-high.
Sophomore Mattison DeGarmo and freshman Tara Traphagan each
tied their season-high in kills with eight and six, respectively. Freshman Madi Fields once again tied her career-high with four assists, in addition to her
nine digs. Junior Lily Austin recorded eight digs during the match, while
Traphagan posted seven for UW. Junior Shelby Johnson added five digs and one
assist for the Brown and Gold.
New Mexico (10-9, 1-5 MW) jumped out to a 7-3 lead behind
two service aces to open the first set. A block from UNM made it 15-10 before
UW called its first timeout. With DeGarmo serving, Wyoming collected
five-straight points to cut UNM's lead to one, 19-18, and then eventually tied
it at 23. Wyoming completed the comeback by claiming the last two points to
take the first set, 25-23. Slofkiss recorded her first six kills to lead UW,
while Chacon dished out ten assists.
Beach's third kill of the match made it 4-1 to begin the
second set. UNM worked its way back to tie things at seven, before Slofkiss
recorded her tenth kill to make it, 15-12. After a New Mexico timeout, the
Cowgirls went on a 10-5 run to take the second stanza, 25-18. Slofkiss had five
kills for the Cowgirls, as Chacon recorded 14 assists.
The third set was back and forth until a kill from Traphagan
opened and seperated UW's lead, 10-7. The Lobos called timeout as the Cowgirls
held a 15-8 lead. Slofkiss recorded her then season-high 17th kill to put UW
up, 16-8. UNM collected the next two points to cut the lead to six, 16-10. Wyoming
then grabbed nine of the last 13 points to seal the victory. Slofkiss added
seven kills in the third frame, as well as three digs.
Wyoming will be back in the UniWyo Sports Complex for its
next two matches. The Cowgirls will face San Diego State on Thursday, and
Nevada on Saturday. Thursday's match is faculty and staff appreciation night,
as Saturday is the Dig for the Cure match. Fans will be able to bid on
match-worn jerseys while the Cowgirls play the Wolf Pack. All proceeds from the
auction will go to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center's Cancer Clinic.
