LARAMIE, Wyo. (Oct. 28, 2016) – Wyoming women's swimming and diving claimed
a dual victory over New Mexico State on Friday evening, winning 12 of the 13
events to defeat the Aggies by a score of 153-84.
The Cowgirls opened the dual by
earning victories in the first six events. The 400 medley relay team kicked off
the meet, winning by 6.5 seconds with a time of 3:53.90. Freshman Tati Iturbe placed
first in the 1000 freestyle (10:50.30), followed by junior Kelly Sheldon in the
200 freestyle (1:55.84), senior Danielle Badger in the 50 free (24.56) and sophomore
Samantha Burke in the 200 IM (2:10.24).
"We swam well, there were some
events I thought we could be better in, but we did really well in all the 200
events and the 50 freestyle" UW head coach Tom Johnson said. "The last relay
was great. This was a difficult 48 hours for the team, but I'm proud of how
they performed. Having recruits here, I feel it's important that they give
their best effort and they did tonight."
Wyoming closed out the meet with
wins in the final six events. Sophomore Isobel Ryan led the way with a victory in the 100
freestyle, finishing in 52.90, and then swam the first leg of UW's 200 free
relay which won with a time 1:36.71, beating out the competition by nearly four
seconds. Freshman Karla Contreras claimed victory in the one-meter dive
(295.58), while senior Keely Bishop won the three-meter (277.88).
Wyoming swimming and diving will host
Colorado Mesa on Saturday, Nov. 5, in Green River, Wyo. The dual is set to
begin at 1 p.m.
