NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -

The Wyoming women's tennis team continued its winning streak with a 4-3 win against the CSU Northridge Matadors on Friday afternoon in Northridge. The Cowgirls are now 8-5 overall on the season.

"We had a good week in California and picked up some much needed experience and wins on the road," head coach Dean Clower said. "I felt like we really grew up as a team on and off the court. We are playing much better doubles and learning how to win as a team."

The Cowgirls jumped out early to a 1-0 lead by winning two out of three doubles matches. At the number three position, Dorottya Jonas and Silviya Zhelyazkova defeated Corinne Schnyder and Mari Taslagyan, 6-0. The Matadors evened it up as Mickey Hsu and Kristen Poei with a 6-2 win over Alma Espinosa and Christa Gecheva. It came down to Jessica Parizher and Magdalena Stencel beating Vivian Lin and Criss Rodriguez, 6-3.

In singles action, Wyoming took three out of six matches to come away with the close win. Gecheva and Nastya Tokareva gave the Cowgirls a 3-0 lead in the match. Gecheva defeated Schnyder, 6-2, 6-1, while Tokareva beat Lin, 6-3, 6-0. The Matadors won their first point of the day as Hsu won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1 over Stencel. CSU-Northridge made the score 3-2 with Poei winning 7-5, 6-2 over Parizher. Wyoming would earn its fourth point and the match with Zhelyazkova earning a straight set win, 6-1, 7-6 (5) over Taslagyan. In the final match of the day, Jonas lost in three sets, 6-0, 2-6, 6-4, against Rodriguez.

"We knew coming in against CSU-Northridge we would have to have everyone clicking on all cylinders and we did that. Silviya once again clinched a huge point for us and I can't be happier for her. She has been a stronghold for this team over the last four years and leads by example every day. The players will get a much needed day of rest tomorrow before starting preparation for a tough conference season."

Wyoming will return to action on Friday, March 27, against the Utah State Aggies. The match is set for 11 a.m. MT in Logan, Utah.
