Depth at key weights helped the University of Wyoming wrestling team win its fifth-straight dual Friday night, as the Cowboys bested Cal Poly, 23-15.

Missing three regular starters due to injury, UW (5-2 overall) overcame a scrappy Cal Poly (0-8) squad thanks to six bout wins, including three bonus-point victories. It was the first true road dual of the season for Wyoming, as the previous three duals away from Laramie were neutral-site contests.

Senior Andy McCulley (174), sophomore Benjamin Stroh (184) and junior heavyweight Tanner Harms all sat out, opening the door for three reserves to earn the start in their absence. Redshirt freshman Luke Paine (174) and junior Jace Jensen (184) each lost, but senior heavyweight Leland Pfeifer helped seal the team win with a 5-2 decision.

Wyoming senior Tyler Cox got things started with his 20th career pin at 125 pounds, sticking Isaac Blackburn at the 3:55 mark. Sophomore Drew Templeman followed that up with a 20-7 major decision at 133 to give UW a 10-0 lead.

The Mustangs earned a win at 141, but sophomore Jake Elliott stopped the bleeding at 149. He was down 5-2 in the first, but reeled off six-unanswered points and racked up nearly 4:30 in ride time to win 8-6. Senior Dakota Friesth added to the lead with a 14-4 major decision at 165.

After Cal Poly won the next two bouts to draw to within two points, 17-15, senior Shane Woods overcame a four-point deficit at 197 to win 10-8. Pfeifer's win to end the night gave the Cowboys their final margin of victory. Wyoming now has won four-straight meetings versus Cal Poly, dating back to 2012, and are 4-4 in the 47-year series with the Mustangs.

UW will be back in action Jan. 17 when the Cowboys visit conference foe Utah Valley in a 7 p.m. dual.
