Suffering just its second defeat of the year, the University of Wyoming football team dropped a 42-21 contest Saturday night on the road to Texas State.

The Cowboys (3-2 overall, 1-0 Mountain West) went into halftime tied 14-14 with the Bobcats (3-1), but couldn't overcome a 28-point second half from Texas State. The game was marred by a three-hour, 28-minute delay in the second quarter due to lightning, and after a 6:06 p.m. kickoff, the squads resumed the game at 10:30 p.m. CT.

Junior quarterback Brett Smith (25-for-48 for 292 yards) tossed an 11-yard score to senior wide receiver Robert Herron to cut the deficit to 35-21 with 11:12 to go in the game, but UW wouldn't come any closer. Herron finished with seven grabs for 94 yards and a score, and Miller led UW with 72 rush yards. Defensively, senior safety Marqueston Huff had 11 tackles, while sophomore Eddie Yarbrough added eight stops.

After the delay, UW's second possession went three plays and 54 yards, ending with Miller rushing for his second touchdown of the night to give the Pokes a 14-7 lead with 3:47 to go in the first half. But Texas State tacked on a 26-yard TD pass to even things up at 14-all with just 29 seconds to go in the half, and later added a rushing touchdown with 9 minutes to go in the third to lead 21-14.

After the Poke offense went three and out on the first drive, the UW defense surrendered a touchdown to Texas State on its first drive to trail 7-0. But the UW defense stiffened on Texas State's next offensive drive to force a punt.

After forcing another punt, the UW offense went on a nine-play, 86-yard drive and capped it off when Miller rambled in from 4 yards out to even things up at 7 with 13:15 to go in the half. Smith went 5-for-5 on the drive for 80 yards.

Texas State then drove down to the Wyoming 37, but Huff tallied his first interception of the season on a leaping catch at the UW 15 and the Wyoming offense took over.

The Cowboys will have a bye over the next weekend and resume play on Oct. 12 versus New Mexico in Laramie. Kickoff will be at 1:30 p.m. MT.
