2012-13: A starter for much of the season at 141 pounds,
Komata got the fi rst dual action of his collegiate career as a
junior. He opened the season with a win in the dual versus
Boise State, and was 4-4 in duals over the course of the
year, with wins over opponents from CSU Bakersfi eld, Cal
Poly and South Dakota State. He had two victories over
ranked opponents, and was sixth in the Reno Tournament of
Champions. Komata won three of his last fi ve bouts to end the
year to fi nish 10-11. Komata was given the Academic Hustle
award by the UW coaching staff for the second year in a row.
2011-12: Komata appeared in two open tournaments at
141 pounds, and found success in both. He opened his season
in the Utah Valley Open, placing third, and won the Rocky
Mountain Open. He was 8-1 during the season with three pins
and one technical fall. He received the Academic Hustle award from the coaching staff for his hard work in the classroom.
2010-11: Komata wrestled in two tournaments at 141
pounds during the season. He went 4-2 at the Northwest Open
in November and 1-1 at the Utah Valley Open in January to
finish with a 5-3 record and one major decision. He went 1-2
against the WWC.
2009-10: Komata redshirted and adjusted to wrestling at
the college level while competing at 133 and 141 pounds in
open tournaments. He compiled a record of 9-8, with one fall
and three major decisions.
High School: Komata was undefeated as a high school
senior en route to a Washington 4A state title at 125 pounds.
He placed third at the state tournament as a junior, and was
a two-time league and regional champion. His senior year he
was captain of the Woodinville High School squad. Komata was
also the 2008 Northwest Regional Freestyle Champion and
Outstanding Wrestler.
Personal: Komata was born in Edmonds, Wash., and he
is the eldest son of Dean and Jan Komata. His younger brother
is Kevin. He graduated in 2013 with a degree in business
administration and is pursuing a graduate degree in business at
UW.
