Biography

Junior (2016-17): Helped the Cowgirls earn valuable points in a number of duals during her junior season... Placed sixth in the 500 freestyle (5:32.49) and fourth in the 1000 freestyle (11:20.97) against New Mexico... Placed sixth in the 200 butterfly against Air Force and fourth in the next dual against New Mexico State... Finished third in the 500 freestyle (5:31.99) against Colorado School of Mines.
 
Sophomore (2015-16): Zavala opened her sophomore campaign with a second-place finish in the 500 free (5:11.22), in addition to seventh place in the 200 fly with a time of 2:13.12 against New Mexico State. The following day, she took fourth in both the 500 (5:14.97) and the 1,000 free (10:50.66) against New Mexico. Against Colorado State, Zavala took third in the 1,000 free with a mark of 10:53.14, and then placed fifth in the dual with Arizona State with a time of 10:40.05 to help UW claim it’s first-ever victory over a Pac-12 opponent.  
 
Freshman (2014-15): Against Border War rival Colorado State, Zavala finished fourth in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:11.12. In the dual against Air Force, Zavala finished fifth in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:14.50 and eighth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.61. She posted a fifth place finish in the 200 butterfly against MW rival New Mexico with a final time of 2:13.50 and finished seventh in the 100 butterfly. She finished sixth in the 200 butterfly against Denver with a time of 2:16.43 and also ended the meet with a fourth place finish in the 500 freestyle with a mark of 5:26.97.
 
High School: Zavala swam at South Pasadena High School. She was a two-time CIF finalist in the 400 freestyle relay. She led her team to four straight league championships and was a three-time team captain. Zavala was also the first South swimmer to make the CIF Division I preliminaries. She holds the 200 medley relay record at South Pasadena High School.
 
Personal: Samantha is the daughter of Jose Luis and Xochitl Zavala. Her father ran track at Cal State- LA. She has two siblings, Sabrina and Diego. She was born on August 3, 1996. She is majoring in psychology.
