Sofiia Filatova

Sofiia Filatova is in her second season as Graduate Assistant for the Wyoming swimming and diving program in 2016-17. Filatova came to Laramie after working as a swimming instructor at Elite Gymnastics and Aquatics in Lenexa, Kan.

"We are pleased to have Sonia as a part of our staff," UW head coach Tom Johnson said. "She had a terrific career at the University of Kansas and tremendous experiences on the Russian National team. She will be able to help us reach into recruiting areas we have never reached before and is a terrific addition to the staff."

Filatova was a three-year member of the Kansas swimming program, as well as a two-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection. She was also named to the Kansas Athletic Director's Honor Roll three times. Filatova competed in the Big 12 Championships all three years as a Jayhawk swimmer. During her senior year, she finished with the top 100 butterfly time for KU at the Championships where she finished seventh in the finals. She also finished sixth in the 100 backstroke at the Championships.

"I'm very excited to begin my coaching career at Wyoming," Filatova said. "I have been a student-athlete and now I will be able to use my knowledge and help other athletes. I have always wanted to be a coach and I know TJ and his staff will be great to work with."

Filatova, who is fluent in both Russian and English, was born in St. Petersburg, Russia and attended National University of Sport and Science in St. Petersburg, as well as participated in the FINA Swimming World Cup before transferring to Kansas. She earned her bachelor's degree in sociology from KU in December of 2014.
