Summary

Biography

2021-22: Maldonado had an outstanding season making himself one of the most decorated players in Cowboy History. He appeared and started in 33 games. He became the First Cowboy in school history to earn MW Player of the Week three times in one season. He was named the Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association on Feb. 8. Maldonado averaged 18.5 points per game to go along with 6.3 assists and 5.7 rebounds per game. He finished the season with 207 assists the most in a single season at UW. He also became the all-time assists leader at UW. He added 6.3 assists per game to rank second in the MW and fifth in the nation. He finished the season ranking sixth in the conference in scoring. He was named First Team All-MW by both the coaches and the Media. He recorded six double-doubles on the season and recorded one triple double becoming just the third Cowboy in school history to do so. His triple double came against San Diego State on Feb. 28 in Laramie.

2020-21: Maldonado appeared in all 25 games for the Cowboys and started all 25 contests. He earned Honorable Mention All-MW honors. He averaged 12.5 points per game to rank second on the team. He led the Pokes in rebounds at 6.8 per game and also assists at 4.6 per night. He ranked third in the conference in assists on the season and ranked seventh in rebounds. He ranked second in the conference a 35.8 minutes per game. He scored a season-high 30 points against Utah Valley. He recorded a career-high 16 rebounds against New Mexico on Feb. 19. He recorded two double-doubles on the season against New Mexico and Omaha. He recorded a season-high eight assists three times once against Mississippi Valley State, Utah Valley and Omaha. He ranked third in the MW conference in assists/turnover ratio at 1.80. He got to the free throw line 134 times on the season to rank third in the conference.

2019-20: Maldonado worked himself into the conversation as one of the top players in the Mountain West Conference. He earned Third Team All-Mountain West by members of the media and was an All-MW Honorable Mention selection by the conference coaches. He appeared in all 33 games for the Pokes leading the team averaging over 35 minutes per game. He led Wyoming in scoring adding 15.8 points per game to rank sixth in the conference, as he also ranked sixth in the league in field goals made at 183. He also led the team in rebounding at 5.8 boards per game. He also led the team in assists with 4.0 per game to rank fourth in the conference. He had his hand in nearly half the baskets for the Pokes last season. He scored in double-figures in all but five games last season. He also scored 20 or more points in six games during the season. He recorded a career-high 32 points in the season opener against Idaho State. He added 27 points against New Mexico and 25 points at Colorado State. He grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds in the MW quarterfinals against Nevada. He recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds against Cal State Fullerton. He also added a double-double with 17 points and a career-high 10 assists against Nevada during the regular season. He had five ore more assists in 10 games last season.

2018-19: Maldonado was a key member of the Cowboys until an injury finished his season. He was awarded a medical redshirt after appearing in eight games with five starts. He averaged 13.8 points per game and 6.8 rebounds per night. He also added 2.3 assists per game and 1.1 assists per night. He recorded 21 points and 12 rebounds in a win against Grambling. He grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds and added 14 points against Niagara. He added 20 points against Northern Colorado to go along with five rebounds.

2017-18: Maldonado had a fine rookie season for the Cowboys in 2017-18. He appeared in 29 games and started 19 of those contests. He added 5.3 points per game to go along with 2.2 rebounds per game and 1.4 assists per night. He scored in double-figures in four games last season including a career-high 14 points at Utah State. He hit a career-best six field goals in that game. He hit a career-high three triples at San Jose State and made a career-best eight free throws against Nevada in the Pokes double overtime win. He dished out a career-high four assists on two occasions; once at San Jose State and the other in the MW opener against San Diego State. He had 13 points in the Pokes win over Nevada and added 13 points on the road at San Diego State.

High School: Maldonado, a 6-6, 185-pound guard played for head coach Joe Hites at Vista Ridge High School in Colorado Springs, Colo. Maldonado was named a two-star recruit by ESPN and was one of the top ranked recruits in the state of Colorado. 
 
He had an outstanding junior season leading Vista Ridge to the semifinals in the 4A State Tournament. He scored 29 points with 11 rebounds in a quarterfinals upset against top-seeded Lewis-Palmer High School. He scored 37 points to go along with 12 rebounds in the semifinals.
 
Maldonado averaged 22.6 points per game as a junior and added 6.9 rebounds and two steals per game. He earned First Team All-State last season. During his sophomore campaign, He averaged 18 points per game and 6.1 rebounds. He has 1,194 career points at the varsity level.
