Sumter will serve as the primary backup to Mike Purcell at the left defensive tackle spot. His size and overall strength are a plus for the Pokes' defensive line and he'll add valuable depth. 2011: Sumter was a member of the Wyoming offensive line to start the season, but moved back to his natural position of defensive tackle for the remaining eight games to provide depth. Sumter was a key reserve on the defensive line for the Cowboys and played in eight games, earning five tackles, including two in each game versus Air Force and Boise State. 2010: Sumter redshirted last season with the Cowboys after transferring from New Mexico Military Junior College with his current Cowboy teammate Kurt Taufa'asau in the spring of 2010. Junior College: Sumter helped lead New Mexico Military to a No. 20 ranking in the final NJCAA National Poll in 2009. He was credited with 45 tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack and one interception his sophomore season at New Mexico Military in 2009. New Mexico Military posted a 7-4 record in `09 and earned an appearance in the inaugural Central Bank Salt City Bowl where they lost 22-14 to Hutchinson Community College of Kansas. In the bowl game, Sumter was credited with five tackles, one sack and 1.5 tackles for loss. The New Mexico Military defense ranked No. 42 in the nation in total defense, allowing opponents 362 yards of total offense per game, and No. 20 in pass defense, giving up only 153.3 passing yards per game. In the weight room, Sumter broke the all-time combined three-lift record at New Mexico Military with a total combined lift of 1,215 pounds in the bench press, hang clean and squat. He played for head coach Jeff Lynn at New Mexico Military. Sumter played his high school football at Dutch Fork High School in Irmo, S.C. Personal: Born March 16, 1990, he is the son of Rochelle and Bernard Sumter. He was also recruited by New Mexico State. He is majoring in criminal justice.
