Well-Being Services

If you are experiencing a mental health crisis (e.g., feeling suicidal, unsafe to yourself or others) same-day crisis appointments are available with the Well-Being Team and/or Athletics Physician Dr. Kurt Johnson Monday-Friday 8am-5pm.. After hours call the UW crisis line at 307-766-8989, the National Suicide and Crisis line at 9-8-8 (available 24/7) or go to your local emergency room/911.  The local ER in Laramie is located at Ivinson Memorial Hospital 255 N 30th St, Laramie, WY 82072

Individual Counseling 

We offer short-term, time limited individual counseling sessions and crisis support to student-athletes to support their well-being, mental health, and collegiate experience. Challenges student-athletes may experience include but are not limited to difficulty managing stress & anxiety, depression/sadness, interpersonal relationships & conflicts, lack of motivation/burnout, trauma, disordered eating and body image concerns, substance use, self-harm and suicidality, neurodiversity considerations, identity concerns and oppression, aspects of sexuality and gender, and grief/loss. 

Mental performance support-

This support is for individuals looking to improve their mental performance skills across different domains. Sessions are typically more directive and skills-based than individual counseling with a focus on topics such as coping with challenges includes performance enhancement, coping under pressure, mindfulness, goal-setting, self-talk, mental toughness, communication, confidence building, imagery, and other skills to elevate performance.

Couples

We can provide couples’ counseling on a case-by-case basis. This can include improving communication, advocating needs, managing conflict, building intimacy and vulnerability, creating a Sound Relational House (Gottman approach) and others. 

Group counseling

Groups can be skills based or around interpersonal dynamics. Skills groups cover topics through the series such as emotional regulation, social anxiety, grief, performance enhancement. 

Group workshops

Group workshops are periodic and can cover areas including mental health, coping under pressure, DEI, leadership, psychological skills for performance enhancement, etc.

Team liaison support

Each team will have access to a team liaison, which is an individual from the well-being department-either a full-time staff member or an intern-who provides team supports. These include programming as initiated by student-athletes or coaches/support staff, conflict management/mediation/group facilitation, attending practices to build connections and reduce stigma, amongst others. 

Biofeedback

Biofeedback includes a range of psychophysiological measures and training to help individuals with coping with stress, getting in the zone, focusing, and emotional regulation. The following devices are available for student-athletes in the well-being office, which link with any Android or ios phone through an app. Interested student-athletes can contact the department to sign-up for their use.

Referrals

In the case that the well-being staff can’t provide the necessary help or service, the department is willing to help connect you with outside providers or partners for a higher level of support, specialized care, or other determined support/resources.
