Who is a Prospective Student-Athlete (PSA)?

A prospective student-athlete is any student who has started classes for the ninth grade. Additionally, a student who has not yet started classes for the ninth grade becomes a PSA if UW provides that individual (or the individual’s family/friends) any financial assistance or other benefits that UW does not provide for prospective students generally.

Below are resources that Prospective Student-Athletes may find helpful.
There are three main classifications for incoming PSAs according to the NCAA Eligibility Center.
Qualifier – May receive athletics aid, practice and compete in his/her first year of enrollment at the University of Wyoming.
Nonqualifier – May not attend the University of Wyoming due to The Mountain West Conference Nonqualifier Rule. See Mountain West Conference Handbook
Academic Redshirt – May receive athletics aid and practice in the first academic term, but may not compete. An Academic Redshirt must pass at least 9 credit hours in the fall to maintain the ability to practice for the remainder of the academic year.

The NCAA requires incoming PSAs to complete at least 16 core courses (college prep courses) with an adequate GPA and corresponding ACT/SAT score. The NCAA provides great resources on the specifics of what PSAs need GPA and test score wise to be considered a qualifier.
