2016-17: Pope was another Cowboy that competed in more than one weight class throughout the season. Beginning the year at 165, Pope took third-place at the UNC Open and won the Bob Smith Open with a perfect 5-0 record. Competing at 174 against tough competition at the Reno Tournament of Champions, Pope boasted a solid 3-2 mark in Reno. A majority of the 15 duals that Pope competed in were at 174-pounds. He went 2-2 at the Big 12 Championships for a fifth-place finish and ended the season with a 22-16 mark with seven tech falls and one pin.
2015-16: Pope was in and out of the Cowboy lineup for most of the season. He did see action in the duals against Iowa State, Oklahoma, Cal Poly, North Dakota State and Northern Colorado. Additionally, Pope competed in the Northern Colorado Open, the Cowboy Open, the UNK Holiday Inn Open, the Reno Tournament of Champions and the Southern Scuffle. He finished the season with a 16-12 overall record with two pins and five tech falls during his sophomore campaign.
2014-15: Pope was a steady competitor for UW in his redshirt freshman season. He finished the season with a 10-7 overall record with three pins, three technical falls and one major decision. He has the eighth fastest pin in school history in his first match of the season earning a pin 17 seconds into the match. He earned a first place finish at the Utah Valley Open. He also finished second at the Northwest Open with his loss coming to teammate Archie Colgan.
2013-14: At 174 pounds, Pope found success in his redshirt season. He was third among all true freshmen with 18 wins and placed in three open tournaments throughout the year. In his first event, he was the runner-up in the Cowboy Open. He followed that up with a second-place finish in the UNC Old Chicago Open. He won six of eight matches to finish the season, including a first-place finish in the Rocky Mountain Open. Overall, Pope had two falls, three technical falls and three major decisions. He racked up the second-fastest pin of the season for UW, putting Glandale College's Quentin Grill on his back in just 31 seconds. Pope had two falls in less than 40 seconds in 29 matches. In freestyle action, Pope was 1-2 at 74 kilograms (163 pounds) in the ASICS Junior National Championships in April 2014. Pope hit the books early and often, bringing home a 3.54 GPA in business administration to claim a spot on the Western Wrestling Conference Coaches' Honor Roll.
High School: Pope finished second in the California state championships in 2011, and finished third at the Reno Tournament of Champions in 2012. A two-time team captain in wrestling, he earned all-area honors as a junior and senior. Pope also was a two-way starter on the Bakersfield football team that won the league title. He was an all-league and all-area player for Bakersfield High. He was an honor roll student throughout high school.
Personal: Born in Bakersfield, Calif., he is the son of Darryl and Stacie Pope. He has one sibling, Hannah. His father, Darryl, was a three-time All-America honoree, wrestling for both San José State and CSU Bakersfield. The younger Pope received interest from Boise State, Cal Poly, CSU Bakersfield, Stanford and Harvard. He is pursuing a degree in finance at UW.
