It's been since 1936 since Wyoming has been bested by Northern Colorado on the football field.
For reference, that's been since even before the second World War.
The Cowboys and the Bears have only met nine times since the Bears' last win, with the two teams last meeting in 2022, where UW easily took care of UNC in Laramie by a final score of 33-10.
While that relatively lopsided affair on a sunny afternoon in Laramie could easily be labeled as a blow-out, nothing compares to when both teams met 73 years ago in 1949, a contest that remains as the most dominant victory in Wyoming football history.
Nov. 5, 1949
UW entered their first contest of November during the 1949 season with a perfect record, vying for a Skyline Six Conference Championship. Not only did the Cowboys not have a single blemish on their record up to that point, but they had also recorded five consecutive shutout victories leading into their road trip to Greeley to play Northern Colorado, which was then known as Colorado State College of Education.
The Cowboys would make it six consecutive shutout victories on the season at Jackson Stadium that day, and convincingly so as the Cowboys would end up winning the game by a final score of 103-0.
Many school records were shattered that day, and many of those still hold firm to this day. UW's offensive outburst against the Bears included a school record 871 yards of total with an average of 14.8 yards per play. The total points scored, touchdowns, extra-point attempts and extra-point makes in the win also remain as modern school records.
The Cowboys were as stout on defense as they were explosive on offense, as their sixth straight shutout victory was guided by a tough defensive effort, holding the Bears to just 205 yards of total offense and nine first downs. The Pokes also recovered three fumbles and snagged an interception.
The most convincing win in Wyoming football history almost led to the first perfect season in program history, had the Cowboys not then proceeded to lose at Baylor in their next outing by a final score of 32-13. The Cowboys finished the 1949 season by defeating Denver on the road, capping the season off 9-1 but undefeated in Skyline Six play.
UW had to wait until the next season to complete the first ever perfect season in program history, where it was able to avenge the lone loss from the season prior by defeating Baylor 7-0 at home in the second game of the season.
The 1949 season still lives on as one of the most dominant seasons in program history, though, as the six recorded shutouts are the most the program has ever had in a single season—and none more memorable than the 103-0 victory over Northern Colorado.
