LARAMIE, Wyoming (8/13/26) – It took 89 minutes and 46 seconds, but the University of Wyoming soccer team found its breakthrough Thursday at the Madrid Sports Complex.
Alyssa Glover netted a score with just 14 seconds remaining, which lifted the Cowgirls to a 1-0 victory over Drake.
"Obviously a grinder. We made it harder on ourselves at times," head coach
Josh Purdum said. "It was the first game, and there were probably a lot of nerves and shaking out the cobwebs, as we were playing in front of a great crowd. I think we had a lot of the momentum and a lot of the game in hand – being a player up we should see quality chances in front of goal – and it took us to the last second to get it done."
The win gives the Pokes a 1-0-0 start to the 2026 campaign. Drake commences the season at 0-1-0.
Glover's score occurred off one final push with under a minute to play that started with a roll out pass from goalkeeper,
Haley Bartel.
Raegan Richardson received and carried the ball up, finding
Maddie Burr who then found Glover.
It was Glover's 20th career goal, which ranks in a tie for fourth all-time in school history. Her 49 career points vault her into fifth in program history.
Speaking of records, Bartel's clean sheet was the 19th of her career. That ties her for the school's best mark all-time.
Bartel only needed two saves for the shutout. That was a byproduct of a couple different things. Yes, Wyoming put constant pressure on Drake, but the Bulldogs were also playing with just 10 after a second yellow disqualified Alanna Pennington in the 38th minute.
Drake goalkeeper, Addie Ford, turned away four shots. Zoey Mahoney led the Bulldogs with a pair of shots.
The Cowgirls finished with a 19-4 edge in shots and a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. Burr and
Jennah Wanner accounted for the most with four apiece.
Lauren Westwood had three to her name, while Glover and
Hadley Linder each fired two shots.
The Pokes take to the road over the weekend. They travel to Northern Colorado on Sunday for a 6 p.m. match at Jackson Stadium.
