PHOENIX, Ariz. (Oct. 24, 2026) – Paige Lauterwasser recorded a career-high 25 kills and Sara Quigley recorded the most assists in a single match since October of 2017, but it was not enough as the Wyoming Cowgirls fell in a heartbreaking five sets to Grand Canyon on the road Saturday. Set scores went 25-20, 17-25, 24-26, 30-28 and 15-9.
After GCU controlled much of the first set to take an early lead in the match, the Cowgirls responded in the second after trailing early on 12-9. Wyoming was able to go on an 11-2 run to take a 20-14 lead and then controlled the rest of the set to tie the match at one set each. The third and fourth sets were absolute battles with both going to "extra" points. Despite that, Wyoming never trailed in the third, which featured 13 ties. The fourth had 12 ties and four lead changes as neither team could grab a hold of control. However, the Lopes were able to end with back-to-back points to force a fifth set. Grand Canyon then took the match thanks to a strong fifth set.
Grand Canyon hit .298 in the victory while Wyoming hit .234. The Cowgirls had a 7-to-1 advantage on service aces. The Lopes held a slight 10-9 edge in team blocks while also recording 12 more digs, 88-76.
The 25 kills for Lauterwasser breaks her previous career-high of 23 that she set back in 2024 at Utah State. Addy Thorington also had a career-best in kills as she notched 17 in the loss. Emma Winter and Ruby Jensen also finished in double figures with 13 and 10 kills, respectively.
Quigley recorded a match- and career-best 61 assists Saturday, the most for a Cowgirl in a match since Marissa Harmon had 61 against Boise State October 7, 2017. Quigley also added 11 digs and a career-high three total blocks against the Lopes. Emma Winter also had a pair of career-bests on the day as she led UW with 17 digs and three service aces.
Lauterwasser and Peyton Carruth also had double-digit digs in the loss, recording 16 and 14, respectively. Jensen and Anna Williams, along with Quigley, led the Cowgirls with three total blocks as well.
Wyoming closes its four-match road swing next week with two matches at Nevada beginning October 29 at 7 p.m., Mountain Time.
