LAS VEGAS, Nevada (10/11/26) – The University of Wyoming soccer team's match at UNLV was all about responding. Whether it was in response to the Rebels knotting the game up multiple times or responding after being inserted into the game early and often.
The Cowgirls, behind a hat trick from reserve, Brook Brown, kept pushing back on Sunday at Peter Johann Soccer Stadium. The result was a 4-2 victory that improved the Pokes to 10-3-0 overall and 3-1-0 (9 points) in Mountain West Conference play.
"That tested the resiliency of the group, and they did a good job responding," head coach
Josh Purdum said. "It's a better place to be when you know you can score. We need to make sure we are not putting ourselves in those situations, but we know there's teams good enough in this league to challenge us, and UNLV is certainly one of them."
Brown is the first Wyoming player to record a hat trick in 10 years. The last to do it was Summer Halle in 2016.
Brown's first goal was coincidentally the first time the Cowgirls needed to bounce back after surrendering a game-tying score. Brown headed in a corner kick from
Izzy Schroder during the 42nd minute, which made it 2-1 going into halftime.
Brown's second goal was also a response goal. She took passes from
Alyssa Glover and
Hadley Linder and deposited it in the back of the net during the 59th minute, re-staking the Cowgirls to a 3-2 advantage.
Brown's hat trick goal was less impactful, but it afforded her team some breathing room late. She drew a penalty kick off a corner from
Maddie Burr and cashed in on the opportunity during the 73rd minute.
"She showed up in a big way, and we needed somebody like Brooke to show up individually for the team," Purdum said. "We knew it would be a scrappy one and a physical one. We also knew there were some pieces of her game that if we had the opportunity, we needed quality in front of the goal and she did that."
Before Brown's fireworks on Sunday, there was
Addison Keen. She headed in a set piece from
Maddie Burr in the 10th minute, which represented the match's initial goal. It was Keen's first-career score.
Macee McKenna and Kaitlin Taylor accounted for the goals for the Rebels who fell to 3-7-3 on the season and 1-3-1 (4 points) in league action. McKenna scored in the 14th minute and Taylor in the 53rd.
Wyoming goalkeeper,
Haley Bartel, turned away five shots. UNLV utilized two keepers. Riley Hodson started the game and played 79 minutes, allowing all four goals with two saves. Brooke Kramer finished the match and logged a pair of saves.
The Cowgirls return home this upcoming week. They host New Mexico on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. before playing host to UTEP on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both matches will be held at the Madrid Sports Complex.
