SAN JOSE, Calif. (Oct. 1, 2026) – The Wyoming Cowgirls suffered four-set road loss Thursday evening, dropping their Mountain West road-opener, 25-23, 24-26, 25-19 and 25-23.
Thursday's match was a back-and-forth, tight affair as it featured a total of 33 ties and 15 lead changes across the four sets. San Jose State was the stronger team late in sets Thursday. The Spartans ended the first set with a 5-2 run to take an early lead in the match. After the Cowgirls (7-7, 0-3 MW) rallied in the second set, staving off a pair of set points and ending the frame on a 4-0 run, San Jose State was strong once again late in the third and fourth sets.
SJSU went on a 5-1 run to end the third set and then went 8-3 to close the fourth and decisive set. The Spartans also scored the final three points of the frame, turning a 23-22 deficit into the 25-23 comeback victory.
San Jose State hit .299 on the night while the Cowgirls hit .250. Wyoming held the edge in service aces, 7-6, but committed 20 serving errors to the Spartans' 12. SJSU held a 7-5 advantage into team blocks Thursday night.
Emma Winter led the UW offense with 14 kills on the night and hit .367. Addy Thorington recorded her first-career double-double in the loss, recording 10 kills and 10 digs against the Spartans. Ruby Jensen added nine kills and hit .333 while tying for the team lead with three total blocks. Abi Milby also had three blocks in the contest.
Sara Quigley led Wyoming in the loss with 21 assists. Maddy Stucky chipped in with 15 assists. Paige Lauterwasser paced the Cowgirls with three service aces while Thorington added a pair of aces.
The Cowgirls and Spartans will face off for a second time this week in the next match up. Wyoming faces SJSU at 2 p.m., Mountain Time Saturday on the road.
