BROOKINGS, S.D. (Sept. 6, 2025) – The Wyoming Cowgirls suffered a loss in four sets in their opening contest at the South Dakota State Invitational Saturday. Wyoming lost 3-1 in a neutral-site matchup with Ole Miss. Scores went 25-21, 16-25, 22-25 and 25-12.
Wyoming (2-2) got off to a strong start in the contest, jumping out to an early lead in the first set. The opening set was tight, with UW mainly remaining in control. The Cowgirls surged late in the frame, going on a 6-1 run to turn an 18-16 edge into a 24-17 lead.
The second set saw Ole Miss (3-2) respond, as the Rebels led from start-to-finish in the set to tie that match at 1-1. In the third, Wyoming looked like it had reclaimed control of the momentum, jumping out to an early 8-3 lead and later in the third, an 18-13 advantage. However, the Rebels would respond late, scoring the next eight points and taking a 21-18 lead. From there, Ole Miss would keep the margin at three the remainder of the set. In the fourth, it was all Rebels to close out the match.
Addy Thorington paced the Wyoming offense and was the only Cowgirl with double-digit kills as she tallied 11. Addy Cook had eight kills while Evelyn Udezue chipped in with seven. Defensively, Sarah Holcomb and Thorington led the way with three total blocks each.
In the back row, Skylar Erickson and Paige Lauterwasser led the Wyoming passing with eight digs each. Sara Quigley had 29 assists in the loss. At the service line, Quigley and Udezue led the Cowgirls with a pair of aces each. Wyoming tallied a season-best five aces as a team in the loss.
As a team, UW was held to just a .109 hitting percentage in the contest while the Rebels hit .320. Ole Miss also enjoyed a 9-4 advantage in team blocks and had nine service aces.
Next up, the Cowgirl look to bounce back to end the invite Sunday. Wyoming will face host South Dakota State at 11 a.m., to close things out.
