LARAMIE – Wyoming needs to celebrate homecoming without too many fireworks.
 
That's the challenge defensive coordinator Aaron Bohl's unit will be up against vs. undefeated UNLV's explosive offense on Saturday at War Memorial Stadium (5 p.m., CBS Sports Network).
 
The Rebels (4-0) are averaging 36.8 points (31^st) and 450.5 yards (29^th) per game this season. The Cowboys (2-2) allowed 18.8 ppg (37^th) and 359 ypg (71^st) during their four non-conference games.
 
UNLV quarterback Anthony Colandrea has completed 72.2% of his passes for 940 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions.
 
Running back Jai'Den Thomas is averaging 8.7 yards per carry with 492 yards and five touchdowns, and wide receiver Jaden Bradley is averaging 17.8 yards per reception with 355 yards and two touchdowns.
 
"Colandrea is the key," UW head coach Jay Sawvel said. "He's an extremely talented quarterback and possesses the dual-threat capability that is something that everyone is always wanting to have in their quarterback and everybody finds challenging defensively to play against."
 
Colandrea, a Virginia transfer, is UNLV's second-leading rusher with 229 yards and a touchdown.
 
The Pokes only allowed 10 points through the first 10 quarters of the season. UW had several busted assignments in the secondary and allowed a late 35-yard touchdown run during the disappointing 37-20 loss at Colorado on Sept. 20 in Boulder.

Bohl and the staff had some extra time to correct mistakes and focus on this crucial Mountain West opener during an open date last week.
 
"You're talking about a couple people not playing the way they need to play. We've addressed that, worked on that," Sawvel said. "We continue to keep pounding in the secondary with the group that we've got because I think there is a good group there."
 
Senior safety Andrew Johnson, junior nickel back Desman Hearns and redshirt freshman cornerback Tyrese Boss have played well this season.
 
UW's two starting linebackers, Brayden Johnson and Evan Eller, are among the highest graded players in the FBS.
 
Nose tackle Ben Florentine has been a steady anchor on the defensive line. Defensive ends Tyce Westland, Brayden Wilson and Chisom Ifeanyi flashed their edge rushing talents against CU dual-threat QB Kaidon Salter.
 
"We've got to be really good Saturday night, there's no question," Sawvel said.
 
UW's offense also knows it needs to execute at a higher level in MW play.
 
Quarterback Kaden Anderson threw two touchdowns in the second half, including a 41-yard strike to Eric Richardson, to get UW back in the game against the Buffaloes.
 
Sawvel is confident wide receiver Jaylen Sargent, who did not have a catch at CU, and tight end John Michael Gyllenborg, who did not play due to injury, will start producing to match the lofty preseason expectations for both talented targets.
 
"It's reasonable to expect with where we are in the program that we get several weeks from now and Jaylen Sargent has all of a sudden popped and John Mike Gyllenborg all of a sudden we're getting big games (from him)," Sawvel said. "I think those are reasonable things. I see it coming with Eric Richardson, I see it coming with Jaylan Bean at times. I see those guys on a rise and it's like, OK, I think there's an expectation we're going to start seeing that."

True freshman Samuel "Tote" Harris led the rushing attack with 126 yards on 19 carries at CU.

The Cowboys will be without starting left tackle Nathan Geiger for the remainder of the year. The redshirt sophomore suffered another season-ending injury to the same knee he tore an ACL in during the 2024 opener at Arizona State.
 
Jake Davies will fill in for his classmate, just as he did for 11 games and three quarters last season.
 
"It's unfortunate for Nate because he worked so hard to get back and was playing pretty well," Sawvel said.
 
The Rebels, also coming off an open date, scored the final 17 points to defeat Miami (Ohio) 41-38 on Sept. 20 in Oxford, Ohio. It was UNLV's first-ever win playing in the Eastern Time Zone.
 
Now Dan Mullen, the first head coach to start his Rebel career 4-0 since Tony Knapp in 1976 when the program was Division II, will try to lead UNLV to its first win in Laramie since 20023.
 
"They're coming in with their season in front of them, they've got the opportunity to go play for the Mountain West Championship," Mullen said of the Pokes. "You have a lot of teams in this league that expect to compete for the title."
