LARAMIE, Wyo. (Sept. 19, 2025) – It was another heartbreaking five-set loss for the Wyoming Cowgirls Friday night on night two of the UniWyo Invite. For the second consecutive match, the Cowgirls failed to hold onto a two sets to one lead in match, ultimately falling five, this time at the hands of Idaho State. Set scores went 21-25, 25-16, 25-15, 22-25 and 14-16.
After dropping the first set on the night, Wyoming (3-7) came out firing in the next two sets to take the lead in the match. The Cowgirls controlled much of the second set on their way to victory in the frame and didn't trail in the third. However, Idaho State would respond, leading most of the way in the fourth to win the set and take it to a decisive fifth set. The fifth set featured 11 ties and three lead changes. The Bengals led by as many as three at 9-6 in the frame before the Cowgirls battled back to take a lead of their own at 12-11. After UW tied things later on at 14-14, ISU scored the final two points to put the match away
Offensively, it was a balanced Cowgirl attack as five players were in double figures for kills. Addy Cook once again led the way with 15 in the loss. Sarah Holcomb and Claire Wagstaff each added 12 kills while Jillian Gregory and Paige Lauterwasser finished with 10 apiece. Holcomb led Wyoming by hitting .444 on the evening and had nine total blocks on the night.
For the second straight night, Skylar Erickson reached 25 digs, tying her career high from the previous evening. Lauterwasser and Lily LaFlesch also set career-highs in the loss, each notching 19 digs in the contest. For the second consecutive match, Sara Quigley and Maddy Stucky tallied 28 and 21 assists, respectively. Quigley led the Cowgirls with three service aces against the Bengals. Defensively, Jordan Sandy and Clair Wagstaff added five total blocks each.
As a team, the Cowgirls out-hit the Bengals, .200 to .147. UW also had a 5-2 advantage in service aces and had 16 total blocks to ISU's 12. The Bengals tallied 10 more digs and eight more assists on the night and had fewer serving errors.
Wyoming looks to close things at the UniWyo Invite on a high note Saturday as it returns to action for a 1 p.m., first serve against Portland.
