LARAMIE, Wyoming (9/14/25) – The University of Wyoming soccer team celebrated its seniors on Sunday at the Madrid Sports Complex. And even though there's quite a few matches left in the season, plenty of which are at home, the Cowgirls made Sunday a very special day.
Wyoming shut out Colorado Mesa, 1-0, behind a goal from
Kiley Ballek. The win improves the Pokes to 5-1-1 on the season, while the loss drops the Mavericks to 3-1-0.
"Credit to Colorado Mesa," head coach
Josh Purdum said. "They came out strong, and they came out fast. They had a couple different ideas that challenged us, and that's what we needed to see. Our girls did a good job finding a goal and getting the win."
The goal was scored by Ballek off a feed from
Alyssa Glover. That's Ballek's third score of the season and Glover's second assist on the year.
It was also goalkeeper,
Haley Bartel's, fifth shutout of the season. She only needed one save to accomplish what was her 15th career clean sheet.
The margin of victory was close, but the game was slanted in Wyoming's favor for a majority of the contest. The Cowgirls fired 14 shots to the Mavericks' six and half of the Pokes' shots challenged Colorado Mesa keeper, Keely Wieczorek, who finished with six saves.
Glover accumulated half of Wyoming's shots with seven. Ballek and
Hadley Linder also had multiple shots with two apiece.
As stated, it was Senior Day on Sunday. Five Cowgirls –
Eliza-Grace Smith,
Ava Furrow,
Jazi Barela,
Lily Brongo and
Peyton Hunt – were honored after the match for everything they've done for the program during their respective careers.
"They mean a lot and emotions are high right now because the seniors mean so much to this program," Purdum said. "The legacy they leave will be part of their place. I can't thank them enough for everything they've given to the program. I'm looking forward to playing the rest of the season for them."
The rest of the season begins with a trip to South Dakota. The Cowgirls battle South Dakota State on Thursday before going to South Dakota on Sunday.
