GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Cowgirl golfer Lucia Morelli made history during the final round of the Bobcat Desert Classic on Wednesday.

Wyoming's talented true freshman from Mercer Island, Wash., tied the program record for lowest tournament score, finishing with a three-round 211 (-5).

Morelli, who was playing as an individual, finished fifth overall in the field of 60 golfers. She matched the record held by former Cowgirl Gabrielle Gibson, who shot 211 (-5) on Oct. 24, 2017, at the FIU Pat Bradley.

"Phenomenal performance by Lucia from start to finish this week," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "I'm so proud of her composure and confidence."

Morelli shot a 69 (-3) in the third round, which was the third-lowest score recorded among the field, on the par-72, 6,154-yard Golf Course of Estrella. She carded a 70 (-2) on Monday and a 72 (even) on Tuesday.

"She has responded well to adversity all year and it showed in her veteran performance," Stender said of Morelli.

The Cowgirls finished fifth in the 10-team Bobcat Desert Classic after executing their lowest round (291) to finish at 886 (+22).

Weber State finished -6 for the tournament to hold off Idaho by five shots. The Vandals' Zoe Newell (-8) shared individual medalist honors with Montana State's Lauren Greeny (-8).

UW senior Meghan Vogt shot 71 on Wednesday to move up six spots into a tie for 12th at +3 for the tournament. Freshman Kira Reisner (+5) also shot a final round 71 to finish tied for 16th and junior Grace Dunkleberger (+6) closed a solid week with a 74 to finish tied for 19th.

Both Reisner (221) and Dunkleberger (222) recorded the lowest three-round scores of their careers.

"I'm very pleased in our balanced round and competitive finish as a team," Stender said. "We have had steady performances from Kyla (Wilde) and Meg all season while Grace and Kira have come on strong as we close out the spring."

The Cowgirls leave Arizona with some momentum as the focus shifts to the Mountain West Championship April 15-17 in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

"This team has responded with resilience and continued to commit to our process," Stender said. "I have so much belief in their skillset that if we can click at the same time, we will have a successful conference championship."
