LARAMIE – Nobody is enjoying spring practice more than Shannon Moore.
Wyoming's tight ends coach has the deepest, most experienced and arguably most talented meeting room on the team.
John Michael Gyllenborg is poised for a special senior season and
Evan Svoboda, last year's starting quarterback, is making a smooth transition to the position.
Isaac Schoenfeld, the 6-foot-5, 258-pound junior from Rock Springs, has also developed into a mismatch for defenses.
Justin Erb has earned a scholarship from head coach Jay Sawvel for his play at tight end and significant special teams contributions.
But
Jake Wilson isn't just another face in the tight end crowd.
The versatile sophomore has stood out during the Pokes' first six practices. And not just because Wilson decided to dye his hair platinum blonde over spring break.
"
Jake Wilson is a good football player. He's going to do a lot of really good things here," Sawvel said after Saturday's pad-popping practice. "He's a physical guy, big body. I think he's 245 pounds now. He came here at 220. Runs very well.
Jake Wilson is going to play for us a lot this fall. We're blessed with the tight end room right now and we need to keep that going."
Wilson was moved to running back after some injuries in the backfield last season and even had one carry. He will be among the featured tight ends in 2025 after improving his run blocking and route running this offseason.
"I think it's going to be a big year for me," Wilson said. "I'm just looking to play as much as I can, do whatever I need to do in the offense, help out wherever I can and do whatever I need to do."
Gyllenborg will be the go-to-target in the passing game, but Moore said the senior asked to be on the field for run plays during "super combat Saturday" to continue to improve his overall game.
Wilson has been soaking up every second learning from Gyllenborg.
"It's an awesome luxury," Wilson said. "You're talking about a guy that's probably going to play at the next level. He's super cool, super approachable. He's always teaching us, helping us out and he's a big help for me for sure."
As a three-star recruit from Montgomery, Texas, Wilson had offers from the service academies (Air Force, Army, Navy), Ivy League programs (Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton) and an in-state Big 12 offer (Texas Tech).
The Cowboys won the key recruiting battle, and it appears Moore has landed another special tight end.
"Through six days he has made a lot of plays in the run and the pass game," Moore said. "I'm really excited about him. He's a great addition to our room with everybody."
