COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Wyoming's
Lucia Morelli was named the Mountain West freshman golfer of the week on Thursday, a day after tying the program record for lowest tournament score.
Morelli, a true freshman from Mercer Island, Wash., finished fifth at the Bobcat Desert Classic playing as an individual after shooting a three-round 211 (-5). She matched the record held by former Cowgirl Gabrielle Gibson, who shot 211 (-5) on Oct. 24, 2017, at the FIU Pat Bradley.
This is the second UW freshman to earn the award this season.
Kira Reisner earned the award on March 13 after finishing 25th at the Southern Utah Thunderbird Invitational in St. George, Utah.
San Jose State Lucia Lopez Oretega is the MW player of the week after shooting a four-under 68 in her final round to finish sixth at the Silverado Showcase in Napa, Calif.
Morelli and Reisner will help lead the Cowgirls at the Mountain West Championships next Tuesday through Thursday in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
