LARAMIE – First team to 100 wins?
That might be too conservative of a point total projection when Wyoming hosts Cal State Fullerton on Saturday at the Arena-Auditorium (2 p.m., Mountain West Network).
Head coach
Sundance Wicks and the Cowboys (1-0) want to push the pace this season, especially at 7,220 feet. UW was able to do that for the most part during a 99-75 win over Northern State in the opener.
Meanwhile, the Titans (1-0) set a program record for points in a game during a 136-82 win over Caltech. Six different players scored in double figures for Cal State Fullerton, led by Jaden Henderson's 25 points on 10-for-16 shooting.
"I know this, they scored 137,000 points in their first game," Wicks quipped. "They broke the school record for most points. They shot (39) 3s and hit 16 of them. It's going to be a track meet on Saturday."
This will be a significant step up in competition for both teams. Northern State, Wicks' alma mater, is a Division II program, and Caltech plays at the Division III level.
Wicks has warned his players – UW has six freshmen and 12 newcomers on the roster – about not taking any opponent on the schedule for granted, citing some stunning early non-conference results in the MW.
A small group of die-hard Boise State fans held a candlelight vigil around ExtraMile Arena to "clear the energy" from the Broncos' mind-boggling 79-78 loss to Hawaii Pacific in the opener.
"We don't overlook any opponent," Wicks said. "We sure aren't going to overlook Fullerton because (head coach) Dedrique (Taylor)has done wonders there. He's an unbelievable coach. Fullerton should be lucky to have Dedrique just because of how many NCAA Tournaments he has been to, and he has been able to produce winning program after winning program."
In his 13
th season, Taylor has led Cal State Fullerton to four postseason tournaments, including two NCAA Tournament appearances, and three 20-win seasons.
The Cowboys held off the Titans last season for a 73-69 road win on Dec. 22, 2024. This matchup is expected to be more high scoring.
Naz Meyer led UW with 19 points against Northern State with
Khaden Bennett (14 points),
Adam Harakow (12 points),
Damarion Dennis (11 points) and
Matija Belic (10 points) also scoring in double figures.
The Pokes finished with 62 points in the paint. The number would have been even more dominant, but the team missed 14 layups.
"We want to play fast, we know that," Wicks said. "It's who can play fast and focused. It's going to be a fun game. It's also a game that makes me nauseous, just because I'm still getting used to this playing fast stuff, and they're a team that wants to play fast as well."
