LARAMIE, Wyo. (Nov. 25, 2025) – The Wyoming Cowgirls are the No. 3 seed at this week's Mountain West Volleyball Championship Tournament. The Cowgirls will face sixth-seeded San Diego State in the opening round at 5 p.m., Mountain Time Wednesday in Las Vegas. This is Wyoming's first appearance at the tournament since the league began the six-team format in 2021.
The Cowgirls (17-12) ride a four-match winning streak into the championships and are coming off a pair of thrilling five-set wins to close the regular season last week. UW "reverse swept" New Mexico to open the week Thursday and then fended off six match points from Grand Canyon in Saturday's finale. Wyoming finished the regular season with a 13-5 mark in conference play. The 13 wins are the most Mountain West wins since 2019, when the Cowgirls won 16 league matches.
Sarah Holcomb closes the regular season leading the league for the third consecutive season with 1.49 blocks per set. Holcomb becomes the first student-athlete in Mountain West history to lead the league in blocks for three straight seasons. Holcomb also finished second in the conference with a .349 hitting percentage. Skylar Erickson finished seventh in the league in digs per set, averaging 3.62 a set. Erickson, who became just the 10th member of the 1,000-Digs Club in program history in Thursday's win, is now seventh in UW history with 1,035 career digs. Paige Lauterwasser, who led Wyoming last week with 36 kills and has a team-best 310 kills on the season, is 26.5 points away from 1,000 points for her career.
As a team, Wyoming ranked first in the league averaging 15.40 digs per set. The Cowgirls' 2.72 blocks per set ranks third in the MW and is 17th in the country. UW's 310 total blocks in 2025 are the sixth-most in the nation. The Cowgirls' .219 hitting percentage ranks third in the Mountain West while their opponent hitting percentage of .207 was sixth in the league. Wyoming was also sixth in assists per set this season with 12.02 per.
San Diego State is led by one of the top players in the league in Taylor Underwood, who ranks fourth in the Mountain West in kill (3.54) and is sixth in points (3.90) per set on the season. Zara Stewart's 3.73 digs per set this season ranks fourth in the conference. As a team, the Aztecs are hitting .193 as a team while their .202 opponent hitting percentage ranks fifth-best in the MW. SDSU also ranks in the top-half of the league in service aces, averaging 1.35 a set.
