SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Nov. 15, 2025) – The Wyoming Cowgirls used a dominating defensive effort on the road Saturday in an impressive sweep over San Diego State. With the win, the Cowgirls clinched a spot in the Mountain West Volleyball Championships Thanksgiving week in Las Vegas. This marks the first time Wyoming has qualified for the tournament since the Mountain West brought its championship format back in 2021. Set scores Saturday went 25-14, 25-12 and 25-19.
Wyoming (15-12, 11-5 MW) dominated the first two sets in the win and ended the first set with a 5-0 run and the second, only trailed once, at 1-0 and closed the frame on a 6-2 run. The third set was more of a back-and-forth affair as San Diego State put up a fight early. However, the Cowgirls would turn a 15-15 tie into a 10-4 stretch late in the third and closed things out with a 6-1 run late.
The Cowgirls held the Aztecs to just a .047 team hitting percentage in the sweep, a season-low for a Wyoming opponent this season. UW, who hit .263 as a team, out-blocked SDSU 16-5 in the contest. The Cowgirls also recorded six serving aces in the win while the Aztecs didn't record one.
Claire Wagstaff led a balanced Wyoming attack with eight kills on the day and hit .313. Sarah Holcomb had seven kills and hit an even .500 as she didn't commit an attack error. Addy Cook added six and hit an efficient .357.
Defensively, Holcomb continues to terrorize opponents at the net, recording her fourth match with double figure blocks as she had 11 in the victory. Emma Winter tied a career-high with six blocks against SDSU while Jordan Sandy and Wagstaff recorded five and four, respectively. In the back row, Skylar Erickson and Paige Lauterwasser led the way with 10 digs each. Erickson is now just two digs shy of the 1,000-digs club in program history.
Both setters were solid for the Cowgirls in the win. Maddy Stucky recorded 15 assists while Sara Quigley added 12. At the service line, Sandy recorded three aces while Erickson had a pair of aces.
Next up for Wyoming is the final regular season week of the season. The Cowgirls close with their final two matches at home. UW hosts New Mexico Thursday night at 6:30 and closes the regular season with Senior Night Saturday, November 22 as Grand Canyon comes to Laramie for a 6 p.m., contest.
