LARAMIE, Wyo. (Nov. 1, 2025) – The Wyoming Cowgirls opened the final month of the regular season with a hard-fought four-set victory Saturday afternoon over Fresno State inside the UniWyo Sports Complex. After the Bulldogs rallied to win the first set in "extra" points, the Cowgirls responded to take the next three sets 25-21, 29-27 and 25-14.
After Fresno came back to swipe the first set from the Cowgirls, Fresno State looked like it was in control to take a two sets to zero lead in the match, as it led 16-9 in the second set. However, a 9-0 run from Wyoming pushed the Cowgirls in front as they were able to control the rest of the set and knot things up at 1-1. In the third, much like the first, UW was in control much of the set before a late Fresno rally. The Bulldogs were able to force multiple set points before back-to-back kills from the Cowgirls broke a 27-27 tie and gave Wyoming control of the match. In the fourth, it was all the Brown & Gold after Fresno State got out to an early 3-1 lead, the Cowgirls pushed in front 5-4, and didn't relinquish the lead from there.
Wyoming hit .211 on the day while the Bulldogs hit .193. The Cowgirls, who recorded nine more kills than Fresno State in the contest, had fewer digs on the day. Wyoming held a 14-12 edge in total blocks but did a lot of damage at the serve line as well. The Cowgirls recorded nine aces in the victory while Fresno didn't record one. UW also had just five serving errors to Fresno State's four.
Claire Wagstaff led the Cowgirls attack with 14 kills on the day as Wyoming had a balanced attack. Sarah Holcomb also finished in double figures with 12 kills and hit .308. Wagstaff hit .310 in the win. Paige Lauterwasser and Emma Winter had nine kills each, with Winter hitting .353. Jillian Gregory had eight off the bench against the Bulldogs.
Defensively, Holcomb again led the UW wall at the net, tallying eight total digs in the match. Jordan Sandy added six while Gregory had four. In the back row, Lauterwasser again came up big, as she tallied 19 digs. Skylar Erickson had 10 on the day. Lauterwasser also led the Cowgirls, tying a career-high with three service aces. Erickson and Maddy Stucky had two aces each.
Sara Quigley led the Cowgirls with 28 assists while Stucky had 27. Quigley also added a pair of kills, an ace and had four digs. Stucky, meanwhile, chipped in with five digs.
Next up brings a four-match road stretch for Wyoming. The Cowgirls begin their two-week road swing Thursday at Boise State in a 6 p.m., contest.
