ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (Oct. 4, 2025) – The Wyoming Cowgirls ran their winning streak to five-straight matches and improved to 4-0 in Mountain West play Saturday as the Cowgirls rallied for a four-set victory on the road over New Mexico. Set scores went 19-25, 27-25, 27-25 and 25-14.
Wyoming's (8-7, 4-0 MW) start to league play is tied for the second-best start to conference play in program history. The 4-0 start is tied with 1989, 1997 and the 2020-21 Covid season for the second-best start.
New Mexico came out firing to begin the match, scoring the first five points of the match and never trailing in the first set. In the second and third sets, the Cowgirls showed great mettle to pull out a pair of extra-point victories in the sets, to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The second set featured 12 ties and seven lead changes while the third had 17 ties and eight lead changes. UW faced a Lobo set point in the second set, at 25-24 before scoring the final three points to take the frame. In the third, the Cowgirls broke a 25-25 tie with back-to-back points to claim the set. The fourth was all Cowgirls as they controlled things to take the set and the match.
Sarah Holcomb once again paced the Wyoming offense with a match-high 15 kills while hitting .371 in the win. Holcomb also recorded her 1,000th-career point in the victory, thanks to a block in the third set. Holcomb and Claire Wagstaff both had four total blocks in the win while Jordan Sandy led the way with five blocks.
Paige Lauterwasser and Wagstaff also finished with double figure kills, recording 14 and 10, respectively. Lauterwasser also notched another double-double, as she had 15 digs on the day. Sara Quigley led Wyoming with 16 digs against the Lobos while Lily LaFlesch had 15 and Skylar Erickson added 14. Maddy Stucky, who, along with Quigley and Lauterwasser, also had a double-double, as she recorded 12 digs and 20 assists. Quigley led Wyoming with 26 assists.
Sandy and Emma Winter both added seven kills in the contest. At the service line, LaFlesch and Quigley had two aces each while Sandy and Stucky both tallied one. The Cowgirls had six total service aces and seven errors. The Lobos, meanwhile, had four aces and committed eight errors.
Wyoming hit .225 as a team in the win while holding New Mexico to a .194 clip. The Lobos held a 10-9 edge in total blocks. The Cowgirls recorded 18 more kills (66-48) than UNM and had seven more digs (79-72).
The Cowgirls return home next week for a pair of matches, looking to continue the winning streak. Wyoming hosts Utah State at 6:30 p.m., Thursday to begin the week of play.
