LARAMIE, Wyo. (9/13/24) – The University of Wyoming swimming and diving team held its annual Brown and Gold Meet on Friday at Corbett Pool. The Brown Team defeated the Gold Team, 281-227.
Head coach Dave Denniston was very pleased with how the team performed.

"I'm fired up. I feel like we're way ahead of where we've ever been before and it's not by design, it's just by the athletes that we have on the team," Denniston said.

The competition featured numerous swimmers winning multiple individual events. Andrew Ravegum headlined the event, taking first in a trio of events. He went 58.53 in the 100-yard breaststroke, 2:09.41 in the 200-yard breaststroke and 1:55.95 in the 200-yard individual medley.

Brynlee Busskohl took first in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke with times of 1:05.44 and 2:25.90.

Gavin Smith won the 100- and 200-yard butterfly events, racing a 50.91 and 1:54.69.

Tara Joyce claimed the 100- and 200-yard freestyle races with times of 52.04 and 1:55.79.

Tessa Bendokas and Quinn Teller also earned a pair of victories. Teller won the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, going 21.14 and 46.95. Bendokas took home the 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard butterfly, racing a 58.83 and 58.57 respectively.

Macey Hansen made a statement as the lone freshman to secure two individual victories. She swam a 5:19.20 in the 500-yard freestyle and a 10:46.11 in the 1000-yard freestyle.

"Our freshmen are fearless and that was exciting to see them get up and race. They didn't care who was next to them," Denniston said. "The divers also looked really good and clean on the boards."

Alicia Gonzalez and Bruno Grau took first in the diving competitions, with scores of 254.20 and 280.30.

An impressive showing in the pool during the Brown and Gold Meet has really sparked Denniston's excitement for the rest of the season.

"It's just fun because it's a contagious energy where we've put in a little bit of work and this meet is two or three weeks earlier than when we typically do it," Denniston said. "They're swimming as fast or faster than they have in years past. (I'm) excited for the season, I think we're at a great launching point and I have no idea what this team is capable of, but they're great at racing and we saw that today."

Wyoming is back in the pool Saturday morning. The Cowboys and Cowgirls combine with Poke alums for the Brown, Gold and Old Meet at 9 a.m. inside Corbett Pool.
