LARAMIE, Wyo. (Nov. 23, 2024) – Two days after getting reverse swept by Utah State, it was Wyoming's turn to return the favor Saturday against Nevada. The Cowgirls rallied to win a five-setter over the Wolf Pack, 22-25, 15-25, 25-7, 25-13 and 15-9.
The Cowgirls (15-12, 7-11 MW) absolutely dominated the final hour-plus of the match, allowing Nevada to score just 29 points in the final three sets. After the Wolf Pack controlled much of the first and second sets, the Brown & Gold turned the tables in dramatic fashion, leading wire-to-wire in the third and fifth, and only trailing at 2-1 in the fourth.
Wyoming hit .252 on the day while holding Nevada to just a .064 clip. The Cowgirls held the Wolf Pack to a negative hitting percentage in the third and fourth sets, while hitting .462 themselves in the final three sets. UW committed just eight attack errors in the day's final three sets.
The Wyoming offense was led by Paige Lauterwasser's 20 kills while she hit .375. Claire Wagstaff also finished in double figures with 10 kills and hit .353. Kayla Mazzocca and Sarah Holcomb added nine and eight, respectively, while hitting .400 and .471.
Holcomb and Mazzocca were terrors at the net defensively, combining for 22 total blocks between the two. Holcomb recorded a career-high 14 blocks in the win while Mazzocca had eight. Wagstaff tallied a career-best with nine total blocks, while Kasia Partyka had five. Wyoming dominated at the net, recording 23 total team blocks. Which is just half a block shy of tying the program record for most team blocks in a five-set match.
Partyka had a solid all-around day as she paced the Cowgirls with 48 assists while adding six digs and three kills. Sierra Grizzle led Wyoming with 22 digs in the victory. Lauterwasser's 11 gave her, her eighth double-double of the season.
Four Cowgirls each recorded a service ace in the win with both teams notching four in total. Nevada committed two more serving errors than UW. Wyoming ended up with 23 more points in the contest and had a plus-11 advantage on total blocks. The Cowgirls also tallied 15 more digs (56-41).
It was a victorious Senior Day for Wyoming. Prior to the match, UW honored Macey Boggs, Mazzocca, Partyka, Kendal Rivera and Sonte Stewart.
