LARAMIE – There weren't as many Cowboys limping around the High Altitude Performance Center on Monday as last week.
However, Wyoming will still be missing several key players against San Diego State on Saturday at War Memorial Stadium (1:30 p.m., CBS Sports Network).
Starting safeties
Wyett Ekeler and
Isaac White and starting guards
Wes King and
Jack Walsh will be out with injuries.
UW head coach
Jay Sawvel also revealed during his Monday press conference that starting nose tackle
Ben Florentine is doubtful and defensive end
Tyce Westland is out after suffering injuries in the 31-19 victory over Air Force.
"I'm looking at it like we've got to do everything we can to try to win this game this week in the condition we're in," Sawvel said. "We're down two guards, we're down two safeties, we're down defensive end depth, we're down defensive tackle depth, we don't have our best running back for the whole season so far. So, we're trying to figure out a way to win this game. That's all I'm concerned with right now."
Sam Scott and
Jamari Ferrell will be the featured running backs with
Harrison Waylee still on the mend from a preseason knee injury and
DJ Jones unavailable due to personal reasons. Starting fullback
Caleb Driskill remains out with a broken thumb.
With
Rex Johnsen starting at right guard and
Alex Conn filling in at left guard, UW outscored the Falcons 24-6 in the second half to win the Mountain West opener.
Scott finished with 97 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries with Ferrell adding 20 yards on three carries.
"Sam is playing well," Sawvel said. "He is progressing, getting better basically every day we get out on the field. His confidence grows. We're excited to get him going another week. It will be good for us."
The Pokes offensive tackles, redshirt freshman
Jake Davies (left) and
Caden Barnett (right), will have their hands full in protecting quarterback
Evan Svoboda on Saturday.
SDSU outside linebacker Trey White is averaging 1.8 sacks through five games which is on pace to break the NCAA record held by former Arizona State star Terrell Suggs, who averaged 1.71 sacks in 2002 (24 sacks in 14 games).
The Aztecs are ranked seventh in the FBS in sacks per game (3.8).
"They've got great players," Davies said. "All I've got to do is trust my technique, play fast, play physical and we'll be good."
SDSU quarterback Danny O'Neil, who passed for 224 yards and a touchdown against Hawaii, is the MW freshman of the week. He is completing 62.8% of his passes with five touchdowns and no interceptions this season.
Running back Marquez Cooper, who ran for 109 yards and two touchdowns during last Saturday's 27-24 win over Hawaii, sets the tone for the Aztecs offense.
"We have to play really well as a football team, have great energy and be ready to go right from the start," Sawvel said. "That's the one thing we don't want to do is have Marquez Cooper get going. He's a really good player."
There was some good news from the training room Monday.
Andrew Johnson has been cleared to play at strong safety after having a pin surgically placed in his broken thumb last week.
Wrook Brown will fill in at the free safety position with
Malique Singleton and
Caleb Merritt handling nickel back.
UW will also get defensive end
DeVonne Harris back to join
Sabastian Harsh,
Braden Siders and
Ethan Day in the rotation.
"There's going to be a time where we're going to be right. It won't be this week," Sawvel said. "It helped us on the open date to get other people healthier and feeling better, but some of the other things are just longer term that we can't get fixed in a week. So, that's where we're at."
