LARAMIE, WYO. (Jan. 18, 2024) – The University of Wyoming women's swimming and diving team heads to Albuquerque, New Mexico, this weekend for a Mountain West Conference dual meet against New Mexico. The meet is set for Saturday, Jan. 20 at 11 a.m. inside the Armond H. Seidler Natatorium.

The Cowgirls haven't faced New Mexico since 2022 in the season's opening dual meet. They were victorious that day in Laramie by a score of 203-147.

The Cowgirls have started this season strong with a record of 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the Mountain West.

"Team unity has a lot to do with that," associate head coach Kristin Walker said. "I think last year they learned a lot of lessons. They really established an identity as a women's team, and they have this awesome soul this year that I think has carried us through all these wins. They are always racing for each other and showing everybody what it means to be Cowgirl tough."

The team's lone loss occurred last weekend against the University of Denver. The Cowgirls fell to the Pioneers, 149.5-184.5, however earned a split at the tri-meet, defeating BYU, 224-110.

The Cowgirls also earned a clean sweep in the Mountain West weekly awards. Carly Palmer claimed Swimmer of the week, Tara Joyce won Freshman of the Week, and Alicia Gonzalez seized Diver of the Week.

Palmer finished first in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke. She was also part of first-place relays in the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay and took second as a member of the 200-yard medley relay team.
Joyce won the 200-freestyle, touched second in the 100-yard freestyle, and was part of two first-place relay teams, the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay. She was also part of the second-place 400-yard medley relay team.

Gonzalez topped the competition in the 1- and 3-meter diving events.

The Lobos enter this week with a record of 0-6 overall and 0-2 in the Mountain West. There most recent lost was this past Saturday at home where they fell to Nevada by the final score of 153-84.

After Saturday's meet, the Cowgirls will remain on the road. They head to Las Vegas for a two-day meet next weekend where both the Cowgirls and Cowboys battle UNLV in Las Vegas.
