LARAMIE, Wyo. (Sept. 30, 2023) – The Wyoming Cowgirls surged out to a fast start Saturday night against San Diego State, but it was not enough as the Aztecs rallied to best UW in four sets, 17-25, 27-25, 25-21 and 25-16. Saturday's contest was played in the Arena-Auditorium.
Wyoming (11-4, 0-4 MW) hit just .111 in the loss while the Aztecs (7-7, 2-2 MW) hit at a .172 clip as a team. UW did get the best of SDSU at the net defensively, out-blocking the Aztecs 16-11 in the match. The Cowgirls also had eight service aces to SDSU's 6. In the back row, that's where San Diego State made its bones, recording 63 digs to the Cowgirls' 42.
Tierney Barlow and Rylee Schulz led Wyoming with nine kills each while Corin Carruth and Paige Lauterwasser added seven and six, respectively. The Aztecs finished the night with three with double-digit kills.
Sarah Holcomb led the Cowgirl defense with a career-high nine total blocks. Barlow added seven and Carruth chipped in with four block assists. Kasia Partyka and Schulz led UW with nine digs apiece while Skylar Erickson and Zoee Smith tallied seven each.
UW continues its four-match homestand next week beginning with a Tuesday night matchup against Border Rival Colorado State. It will be a "Gold Rush" match for the Cowgirls, so fans are encouraged to wear gold for the 6:30 contest.
