LARAMIE, Wyo. (9/30/23) – The University of Wyoming swimming and diving team held its Brown, Gold & Old Meet on Saturday morning at Corbett Pool. It's an opportunity for former Cowboys and Cowgirls to swim and dive alongside current Pokes in an abbreviated meet featuring different events that aren't present at normal competitions.
More than that, though, it's an opportunity for head coach
Dave Denniston to reconnect with a group of people that loved their time in Laramie and mean a great deal to the program.
"Our team culture has been one of the biggest shining parts of our program," Denniston said. "It started with our alumni even before I even got here. I think for them to come back and our younger athletes to see, 'Yeah, this is something that isn't just a tradition.' It's rooted in our program. They know how to work hard. They know how to have fun, and that was showcased today."
The traditional Brown and Gold Meet was held Friday night. Gold Team defeated Brown Team, 342-328.
The intrasquad competition was an all-week event that started with points being awarded in the weight room and in practices. The Friday meet was a culmination of a weeklong team bonding experience that will pay dividends over the course of the season.
"There was a lot of team spirit and school spirit – all of those things were prevalent," Denniston said. "But when it came to racing, they really showcased what they had. Overall, the coaching staff is really impressed with what we saw."
The Cowgirls have a quick turnaround, competing this upcoming Friday. They host Colorado State at 4 p.m. at Laramie High School.
